Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A trainer with 35 years' experience, Johnson offers tips on many facets of canine education, all but guaranteeing to turn pets into models of poise and obedience. She outlines, thoroughly and sensibly, strategies for housebreaking and for curing puppies of their beastly habits--barking, begging for scraps, lounging on forbidden furniture. To promote bonding, she suggests a panoply of tricks, games and sports ranging from the garden-variety "shake" of the paw to soccer to tracking scents. A number of useful jobs, Johnson promises, can also be foisted on the "everyday" dog, from switching lights on and off to hanging up a phone receiver. Those willing to devote an awful lot of time to prepping and pleasing Fido are urged to build "puppy agility courses" replete with high jump, A-frame, open and closed tunnels. The needs of the adopted adult dog are considered separately and at length. Other helpful sections cover the care and training of show dogs, along with ideas for handling them in the ring; and, for "stage owners," training methods applicable to film or television work.

This review is from: Everyday Dog: Training Your Dog to Be the Companion You Want (Hardcover)
This book was purchased for my 14 year old grandson who was given a re-homed male cocker spaniel. Hershey has had no training, no socialization, soils in the house, and suffers from separation anxiety. I have trained many dogs over the course of my life, so when Blake called me and said he was having problems with his new dog, I offered to help him solve some, if not all of the issues Hershey had, but that he would do the actual work I sent him "Everyday Dog: Training Your Dog to be the Companion You Want", because the content covers socialization, basic commands, and teaching the dog tricks as well as taking care of the grooming aspect. When Blake first called he told me he wanted to teach his new dog tricks! I explained to him that before tricks, came the most important things like having control over your dog by teaching him the sit, down, stay and most importantly, come. He also had to demonstrate responsibility for Hershey by walking him at least twice a day, giving him affection, and rewarding him with praise when he did the right thing!Feeding him on time, making sure he has clean water 3-4 time s a day, that he has his parents take the dog to the vet for regular check-ups, yearly innoculations, and Rabies shots, too. I told him that traing is a 3 part step for each command. You teach, than train, than test what you have trained. He can't get exasperated with the dog if it does something wrong; just go back to square one and start over with teaching. Before you know it, I told him, the lightbulb will go on over Hershey's head and he will know what you mean and with encouragement, will do the right thing.

Miss Johnson's book will go a long way to help him achieve these goals. Fortunately, Blake is an avid reader and sharp on the uptake! It won't be long before the whole family will be enjoying the rewards of having a well manned, socialized dog as part of the family. A trained dog is a happy dog with a very happy family!

Along with many other methods, I have used many concepts from this book, and my wonderful Akita puppy has passed the AKC STAR Puppy qualifications to go to become a Canine Good Citizen with future training.
