More About the Author

Most people who've read Way of the Peaceful Warrior (or seen the movie) already know a few aspects of my life. And you may have seen my summary bio at my website, as follows:

"Dan Millman, a former world champion athlete, coach, martial arts instructor, and college professor, is author of Way of the Peaceful Warrior (adapted to film in 2006), and numerous other books read by millions of people in 29 languages. Dan teaches worldwide and has influenced people from all walks of life, including leaders in the fields of health, psychology, education, business, politics, sports, entertainment and the arts. Dan and his wife, Joy, live in Northern California. His most recent book is The Four Purposes of Life.

Dan's website - peacefulwarrior.com -- features a link to the "Life Purpose Calculator,"and to my online courses and other resources."

Now here are some personal notes:

In my youth I focused on self-improvement, taking memory courses, speed reading; practicing martial arts and gymnastics. Then one day I realized that no matter how much I improved myself, only one person benefited -- but if I could influence other people in a positive way, that made my life more meaningful and exciting.

I began teaching gymnastics, and elements from the martial arts -- that soon shifted into the larger arena of personal growth. I began to write and to speak more widely, especially after the publication of my first book.

I've been lucky, maybe blessed, to have the chance to touch many lives around the world.

Joy and I have been married for 37 years and we grow closer each day, it seems, as we gain perspective and cultivate a sense of humor (about ourselves and one another). I'm a proud father of three grown daughters and two grandsons so far.

I believe you'd find me a good (but not perfect) example of what I teach. I continue to practice, to learn, to serve as well as I can. I do my best to keep my head in the clouds but feet on the ground.

I enjoyed reading Dan Millman's The Way of the Peaceful Warrior but after I finished it I soon found myself feeling disappointed, as I have after reading Carlos Casteneda, because the concepts and practices of the protagonists seem so removed from everyday life. Fortunately, I read Dan Millman's website...where he talks about this very phenomenon and gives candid advice on which of his books to read dependening on one's interest. Everyday Enlightenment was clearly the book for me. In this text Millman emphasizes the importance of seeking enlightenment in our everyday lives and the false promises associated with devotion to the latest guru or fad belief system. I find the concepts and wisdom in this book to be quite consistent with my religious and moral beliefs and I suspect this will be true for most readers...

This guidebook by Dan Millman has useful and wise information for everyone. This book is not your typical trite self-help book that's been rehashed 1000 times.

Dan Millman has done extensive training in meditative disciplines, mystical practices, and other endeavors in the search for enlightenment. While he found these practices to be highly inspirational and wise, he also realized that these practices didn't do any good if you couldn't perform your everyday tasks in an enlightened manner. Thus-Everyday Enlightenment.

The book offers 12 practical and well thought-out-of areas or gateways to pass through for optimal growth as a person emotionally, physically and spiritually. Some of the gateways are: self-worth, money, health, emotions, taming the mind, trusting your intuition, sexuality, love, and serving others. As you apply the suggestions in each chapter you'll find yourself becoming more successful with that particular gateway. When you combine all the insights and wisdom you've learned from the gateways you can't help but live in a more satisfied way.

Dan makes it clear that none of us are ever going to perfect these gateways. They serve as signs and guides to lead us on the path of continual improvement. After all, enlightenment is what you do in the moment. In other words, it's the moment-to-moment awareness and actions that we bring to the present that make us enlightened. No one is ever completely enlightened-they just act more enlightened than others in their day-to-day affairs.

I found many of the anecdotes in the book to be inspirational. Especially inspirational was the chapter about serving others. There are many wonderful stories of people doing extraordinary acts of kindness to help others.

The challenge shown here is to LIVE LIFE with an every-day, moment-to-moment awareness of one's own actions; to act with a fearless, one step in front of the other awareness, a consciousness of being.
If you are UNAFRAID to confront your fears, to peer into those dark places that keep you in the shadows -- here's a guidebook for enLIGHTenment to help you on your way.
Thanks Dan -- I've heard you speak in San Francisco & Sacramento and I continue to read and LIVE your teachings daily -- Namaste

Dan Millman, one of the few great teachers who affect all of us, has given us a great gift with this work.
Dan is not a guru on a mountain who offers esoteric sayings, but a real man. He is a champion of gymnastics and husband and father who gives us perspective on life. When was the last time you heard a New Age Guru guide you on how to manage money? Or how to make your body more fit?
Read some of this book. You will find guidance in all aspects of a wonderful life, and advice on how to live a rich and beautiful existence. The world becomes better as you read each word.

Dan Millman, in this book, shows the reader the many gateways that we need to pass in order to realize our true selves and in order to take a greater control of our lives.
Everyday Enlightenment, is not only about knowing more, but doing more. It's not what you know but what you do about what you know. It's the application that counts (just like LifeApps! at yahoogroups). There are many wonderful strategies in this book that if applied, can truly change your life.
Are you willing to change your patterns and your life? If you aren't don't this get this book it'll do nothing for you but provide entertainment. If you want to change your life, you have the tools with this book, USE IT. That's the key, USE this book and see a new you. Don't use this book and soon enough you'll go shopping for another one and another (good business for amazon, no?)

I have read "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior", and I truly enjoyed the message and philosophy that Dan Millman teaches. Everyday Enlightenment develops these lessons a step further, and to allow us to use them in the context of our everyday lives. This book reminds us that there is far more to life than just breathing, eating, and reproducing. We must understand that life is a struggle, and accept that for what it is. We must constantly grow, never stagnate, and open up our true being, not only to the world around us, but to ourselves as well. A wonderful book.
