Book Description

May 18, 1999 Deepak Chopra
Everyday Immortality contains a series of insights, known in eastern wisdom traditions as sutras, or koans. Like a string of pearls, each insight follows the next. You will ponder the meaning of each statement--some very obvious, others more challenging. Through this process, the reader's thought patterns are literally transformed, causing a permanent shift in perception. These exercises are a modern version of Gyana Yoga, India's ancient Yoga of Knowledge, long considered the most direct path to attaining enlightenment and immortality.

As a result of the process, your awareness and your experience of yourself and of the world will begin to change, and you will begin to slowly experience a state of joyful carefreeness and love that will stay with you more and more.

Amazon.com Review

In ancient yoga traditions, a sutra is like a pearl of wisdom--a spiritual commandment to ponder. Deepak Chopra has assembled a selection of modern translations from India's Gyan Yoga, known as the "yoga of knowledge." Each page contains a simple statement--intended to be read slowly and absorbed one reading at a time. "Each sentence must be fully understood and comprehended and give you a new insight before you move onto the next," instructs Chopra. "As you progress through these exercises, understanding and insight unfold in sequence."

On the surface, many of the sutras seem obvious, especially to experienced spiritual thinkers. For example, the lead-in sutra states: "The material universe and the physical body that I experience through my senses are only one aspect of reality." Chopra encourages readers not to be deceived by the simplicity. Ultimately, it is the process, he explains, not the individual sutras that lead to enlightenment. --Gail Hudson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

In a collection of koans or sutras, popular New Age guru Chopra (Ageless Body, Timeless Mind, etc.) offers what he believes is the key to enlightenment. In a brief introduction, Chopra explains that reading and pondering each koan in the book can lead one to higher states of consciousness and awareness. He notes that such practice is the modern version of Gyana yoga, or the yoga of knowledge. If one page is read daily, he says, knowledge will unfold progressively and will lead to flashes of insight. Chopra places one koan on each page so that readers can focus their attention, and he advises readers to relax before reading each sutra. If the meaning of the sutra is immediately obvious, he urges readers to proceed to the next. Most of the sutras are so self-evident, however, that it is difficult to see how any enlightenment can come from them: "Some thoughts are experienced more personally. I call them mine"; "When I quantify myself I create a person"; "All experiences are space-time events." In the end, this collection of sutras is simplicity masquerading as profundity. (June)

5.0 out of 5 stars 20 minutes to mental clarity, September 3, 1999
By A Customer
In the 20 minutes it took to read this book, I changed my view of the world. The world mankind perceives, it explains, is a product of the mind. There is no need to hate anything, doubt anything, worry about anything. You are defining it second by second through your senses. That said, focus on the present, Chopra teaches. Watch the unfolding world like a show, for that's all it is. It is a good show, a show to love, a show to learn from, but a show, happily. No stress. No heavy lifting....a real eye opener

This is a great book to meditate on and reflect upon. I great addition to the Chopak library. To better understand quantum physics I would recommend: The Self Aware Universe by AMit Goswani, Both the Spiritual Universe and the Dreaming Universe by Fred Alan Wolfe

3.0 out of 5 stars A Walk-Through Meditation, January 7, 2004
This review is from: Everyday Immortality: A Concise Course in Spiritual Transformation (Deepak Chopra) (Audio Cassette)
I purchased this book with no knowledge of its contents other than what what Amazon.com had listed for it.

When I sat down to read it I flipped through the pages in dismay as the everything seemed to be sentences of no-brainer content. It wasn't until later in the book that I discovered that the beginning "no-brainer"-isms were a process in the book to begin a walk-through meditation.

At the "Aaah...I get it...it's a meditation", the book was much more enjoyable, but only when it came to light that it was from that perspective that it should probably be read.

As a walk-through meditation, it was enjoyable and uplifting. The journey was full of positive affirmations.

For me it was a relaxing experience. The content didn't particularly include anything that struck an epiphany of any sort, and certainly the book and its content and messages are directed to a Pagan audience.
