Book Description

November 11, 2002
Low-carb eating continues to gain adherents as people discover that they can lose weight and help manage chronic conditions such as diabetes and high cholesterol by eating more low-carb foods. Everyday Low Carb Cooking—here in its third edition—contains 225 recipes from two dozen cuisines that provide a wide variety of low-carb options. The recipes are designed for the entire family to enjoy, and cover salads, soups, and a wide variety of seafood, chicken, beef, pork, and vegetable choices. Haas has already been praised for the incredible variety of his recipes and for offering low-carb versions of such foods as salad dressings, chicken wings, crab cakes, and coleslaws—that are not readily available in other low-carb cookbooks. Each recipe includes macronutrient counts for each ingredient. This is an accessible, proven book of low carbohydrate recipes for everyone who wants or needs to be on a low-carb diet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, July 24, 2000

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've purchased 5 or 6 low carb cookbooks, and this is my favorite. One of the things I like best is that the recipes are not overly heavy. I'm kind of tired of recipes that start like (1 chicken breast, 1 cup mayonnaise, 1 cup cheese - 1 serving), mostly because I don't enjoy the feeling after eating like that. Most of the recipes in this book are for meals that my non-lowcarbing family enjoy. There are some especially good soup recipes (which is my typical lunch since buying this book), and I had received several comments on the coleslaw I served at a recent party. Some of the carb counts can get a little high (10+ per serving), but the carbs are usually spent on healthy vegetables like tomatoes, cabbage, or onions. If you have 30 or more carbs a day to use, you shouldn't have too many problems with these recipes. A lot of the recipes have a complex taste, but are pretty easy to make. There are no dessert recipes, and no breakfast recipes. Some of the recipes can get pretty spicy if you use the recommended measurements, which I love, but you might want to halve any of the spicy ingredients the first go around. The author does detail the carb counts by ingredient, which is a great idea, but doesn't include any fiber, protein, or fat counts. I know people following the Protein Power plan would appreciate fiber and protein counts. All in all, well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Spice of Life, January 13, 2000
Wings! As a lowcarber of 7 years, I rely heavily on wings as both snack food and entrees. This book has 18 different varieties to choose from! Love 'em! Slaw! You haven't lived until you've tried the baked slaw recipe. Just incredibly delicious. If you're looking for a cookbook of quasi-legal dessert recipes, this isn't it. If you're looking for a book that provides plenty of entrees and loads of different ways to get the basic nutrient providing recipes into your diet... this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Low Carb Cooking for Real People, October 30, 1999

Alex Haas finally offers a cookbook for real people with real tastes. I am one of the fortunate ones who had an opportunity to use his book in original form and it was great! Every receipe has been individually tested to ensure great taste, not just low carb. You will not be disappointed!

My personal favorite is Chicken Diablo, but you will find soups, salads, beef, pork, other chicken, seafood, and vegatable recipes that will suit your tastes. And, oh, buy the way, there are desserts too!
