We are in year 3 with everyday math (in a private school and in a very wealthy school district public school) and while the principle of introducing math concepts one year and building upon them again year after year makes sense, the rest of Everyday Math to me is garbage. The cost is extremely high for districts, and the textbooks and workbooks are incredibly obtuse and disjointed. The children do not start at the beginning of the book and work their way through it. For grade school children this is terrible. The curriculum uses vocabulary and concepts that only exist in Everyday Math, literally words that are made up out of thin air. Then the textbook and accompanying workbooks do not correlate with one another, they do not have the children practice what they learn after reading about it, students cannot look back to any reference. The teachers universally can't follow or teach all of the math in the book because it's so obtuse so they teach the kids by telling them to ignore or skip half of what's in front of them, and then handwrite out tests because those they are given from the expensive materials are too confusing.

There is loads of research out there especially in state of Washington that math scores go down when schools use this type of curriculum. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.

We have used this text for a year in my district. The children can't grasp the utterly disjointed idea inherent in the approach, a loop which repeats the same materials from time to time without thoroughly processing any concept. A myriad of concepts is thrown together in just the right way to create confusion, disorder, and another generation of math-haters. Our students are going to throw themselves utterly on this mesmerizing funeral pyre.

I am personally a fan of Everyday Math. My kids have done great with it over the years. I do want to say that you can buy directly from McGraw Hill for almost half of the price for this. Their price is just $10.14 for this. So if you plan to go the route of Everyday Math, consider buying direct for certain things.

This Practice book follows the Everyday Math curriculum for second grade through Unit 6 and was very useful for my 2nd grader, we were able to have more practice with the concepts than what came home in the homelink homework, and be more prepared for the unit tests. Again, volume 1 only takes you through unit 6 of the curriculum, so you need volume 2 to finish the 2nd grade curriculum. Everyday Math takes mathematic concepts and really makes it easy for my son to understand.

Saxon is a great way to provide extra support to your young ones for math. It is comprehensive and repetitious for those who need solid support. You can skip lessons for those who are quicker. It helps my daughter because her school uses everyday math and that is very confusing to her. Saxon gives her exercises that helps her develop solid understanding in vocabulary, concepts and applications.
