Nicole C. Mullen's Everyday People, A Review,
This review is from: Everyday People (Audio CD)
So I recently picked up Nicole C. Mullen's latest album. If you've heard her previous albums, you'll be slightly surpised by this album. Nicole C. Mullen is known for her hodgepodge of influences. She has an acoustic-world music-blues-CCM-gospel-rock-jazz vibe that runs through her music. This is a huge asset on her album, although you usually need to listen to her albums two times to take it all in. So I was sort of surprised at how much of a pop sensibility was running through the first couple of songs on this album. But things are not always what they seem. What Mullen does here is to dip a little bit more into a sort of Motown influence, and even works in a little hip hop into it, a first for her as I recall, all with her inimitable vocal style.
Although the musicianship of her album is awesome, Nicole C. Mullen's greatest asset in this album is her songwriting. For those who may not have know, she was the writer of Jaci Velasquez's hit On My Knees, and had established herself first as a songwriter before becoming a solo artist. Her songwriting skills are out in full force on this album. There were definitely moments where I had to rewind a song because a phrase caught my ear. Now there are definitely the more radio and church-service friendly songs like I Am, which is the same vein as her earlier songs My Redeemer Lives and On My Knees, but the gems are in the songs where she breaks out of the typical. My own personal favorites are Bye Bye Brianna and Valorie. Bye Bye Brianna seems like a song that I will have to see live at some point, and am in the market for Nicole C. Mullen tickets if someone has them (though unfortunately, not for the concert tomorrow night in the Twin Cities). I'll give this album 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Wow. What can I say? Nicole has a great voice and writes great songs. She wrote all of them except for "Everyday People", and they are just fabulous. I have her other album, Talk About It, and I have to say this one is a little different. I'd say it has a little more variety... some songs are more rap and some are just gospel, and there are some in between. She has so many different styles in there that it would please anyone. She has a twirly voice that just blows me away, and the lyrics are always touching. Some of my favorites are Message for You, This This, Music of my Heart, Bye Bye Brianna, Dancin' in the Rain, Gon' Be Free, and Valarie (which is like half the album!) I think this album came out September 2004. Overall it's great. You won't be disappointed.

Wow, I just listened to this. I'm not ususally big on contemporary pop music, but this is a really good album. Nicole has a great depth to her music that you don't find in most modern pop music...probably because she writes most of the songs on the album, and they come from personal experiences. Definitely check out this album...you won't be disappointed.

I started with her signature CD (Nicole Mullen) and this one didn't make me look backward. I am so happy to have it. She blows me away with how she uses alternative music grooves to send messages that speak to life while we're living it.
