Uncommonly melodic, thoughtful tunes, December 22, 2010
This review is from: Everyday Visuals (Audio CD)
I saw these guys open for Liz Phair recently in Boston and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of their songs, their energy level, and their prowess as musicans.
Their lead singer spoke of a Counting Crows fixation when he was younger and there definitely is an element of that in their music, though I think Everyday Visuals songs are perhaps even more polished than the Crows' in the hooks department.
The hooks don't hit you over the head---most rather tend to nestle so comfortably between intelligent lyrics and breezy, competant playing that you're not even aware of them as they're invading your consciousness (interestingly, the same can be said of Liz Phair's recent records --- try writing some harmonically-sound, original hooks, it's not easy).
There are many radio-ready songs on this disc. I really hope this band gets some key exposure as, even though their unique blend of folk-pop-rock isn't "in vogue" in the world of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, perhaps older, more mature audiences will discover it and start to spread the word. In the meantime, grab this disc. It's a bargain given the quality of music it contains.
