Process Music,
By K. Morrison "ovenopener" (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews

Colleen's first album is built entirely of small fragmented loops taken from various sampled sources. The music is very simple, slow, beautiful. One thing that I find amazing about this is that Colleen's music is the process itself. That is, what you're hearing as the end result is the very means by which it is made - the simple loops. You're hearing the broken pieces of the music placed next to eachother. She lets the seams show. If you have the patience for quiet and slow music, then this comes highly recommended.

This cannot be right...why hasn't anyone reviewed this yet? Well, I will not compare it to anything else, let me just tell you that it is amazing. Good for listening to when you want to get lost, because it will happen indefinitely. Where it takes you is sometimes a scary place, but sometimes the happiest place you have ever imagined.

A truly amazing CD, expressive, creative, beautiful, simple and yet sophisticated all at the same time. A must for anyone interested in contemporary ambient music.

I ran into this album at a local record store and the more I listened to it the more I fell in love with it. It could be described as experimental ambient electronica, but Colleen has a way to select and process the sounds and layer the gestures that hits an immediate and unique spot, making my musical brain wonder intently:
Where does she take all of this from? What is the mystery behind all these compelling, riveting textures and developments? Each track has its own atmosphere, sometimes warm and cozy, like grandma telling you forgotten stories while you watch super-8 films of your childhood, some spooky and playful like paper maché ghosts dancing around in a toy castle, others bringing a fragile and mysterious beauty to life that seems dusted but you better put your gloves on and be extremely careful when you handle it! :) There is no limit to the images that come to mind when I listen to this album, and I wonder if I'm the only one who sees the immense quality of what Colleen has achieved. It works well as a vinyl record too. Anyone who is looking for soundtracks to experimental film should definitely give it a listen, if only for inspiration. None of it seems overly complicated, but I never heard an electronica album as mysterious, beautiful, deep, poetic, melancholic and warm that would come even close to affecting me with the same intensity. Occasional mistiness included. (Babies?) Hope we hear more from her like this. <3

I really enjoyed this album, it's the Colleen album that everyone talks about when they talk about Colleen. Perfect music to play in the entrance/doorway of a hookah lounge or club. There's just enough to hang on to to make it not sound like noise if you're not trying to listen to it, just enough unconnectedness to bust your mind out of a funk. I highly recommend this to anyone who would consider listening to it. It's challenging in a fun way, especially to an experimental music newcomer.

Shallowly off-kilter electronic ambiance is little more than wheezy samples and pecked notes. |
