Once upon a time a soul could follow most of the musical developments in any given period. But so much music is made now that it is nearly impossible to know when a truly great album is made anymore. Furthermore the album is often independently produced and thus in danger of going out of print without so much as as a flutter of real recognition. This is one of those albums. Alina Simone has a haunting voice that seems crossed with an indie sensibility and, more importantly, her Russian roots. If you like music like Gogol Bordello, Radusa, The Ukrainians, The Warsaw Village Band and other recent albums of Eastern European folk-punk and other traditional variations this is for you. Don't even bother reading the rest of my words. Just buy this now.The music on this album is an interpretation of the music of Russian folk-punk rocker Yanka Dyagileva. You don't have to know Russian to appreciate this at all. Alina's voice will carry you through to understand the meaning. Also included are translated lyrics, quite profound actually. And Alina gives you a short biography of Yanka's life, which also really helps to make the music resonate. But it's the music that makes this. By the way the photo on the cover is Yanka. And one thing that should happen once you take the bait is that you will suddenly become curious about this girl who died tragically in her young twenties shortly before the fall of the Soviet Empire. There are a couple of albums available. And a website with more information and downloads that you will need to use a translation tool to figure out. But let me tell you it's worth every moment you take. Yanka's music is crudely produced but makes most of the music made in the 90's and 00's look dishonest by comparison. But start here with Alina Simone's miraculous tribute to Yanka Dyagileva.
