Book Description

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?” Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly! In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka. This enhanced eBook includes an audio introduction from the author; audio commentary from Mindy’s friends, including The Office costar B. J. Novak and Parks and Recreation creator Michael Schur; bonus photos, including an exclusive “Avalanche of Awkwardness” slideshow of never-before-seen childhood photos with audio commentary; and four full chapters read by the author.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read for sure. September 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition with Audio/Video|Verified Purchase
This was the first Kindle book I bought, and I was really excited about the audio content (I was pretty sure there was no way a Kindle Touch could display video content, if there had been any). On Kindle? Audio content unavailable. Fine. On Kindle Android App? Audio content unavailable. Fine. On Kindle Cloud Reader on a computer with perfectly good audio/video capabilities? Audio content unavailable. Apparently A/V content is only available on iPhone, iPod and iPad. The good news is THAT was the biggest disappointment I had buying this book. Mindy Kaling is honest, open and fun about her experience and her views on... well, pretty much anything and everything.

Some people have said that "Is everyone hanging out without me?" reads like a collection of essays; maybe it does, but I don't think that's a bad thing. I thought it was a wonderful read, not only for The Office fans, but for anyone who might benefit from a conversation with a person who has found success doing what they wanted to do and achieving what might be perceived as a life of glamour, especially women, and yes, even girls. "It's not as funny as Tina Fey's!" Well, not many people are as funny as Tina Fey, but this is still a great book and I do recommend it. Now here's hoping one day Amazon finds a way to display enhanced content on anything other than iOS, and we'll be all set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and inspiring read September 25, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition with Audio/Video
Now there's probably a million people who have compared this book to the feeling of talking to a cool and funny friend so I won't go there. But I have to say that this book really helped me when I was in a job hunting/life slump. The stories could best be summed up as Kaling awkwardly finding her own in any topic and then succeeding in a mix of either sheer luck and perseverance or the same perseverance with gung:-o personality skills. Overall it's a great read and I'm glad to have bought the extended versions for the audio.

I wish "Nguyen and Ari" was a song too.

An excellent vacation read. I like the overall tone and message in this book. Certainly appropriate to share with college aged girls; I'll be passing it along to my younger cousins for sure. I'm in my mid twenties and enjoyed it.

Although the book is a fun, easy read there are a few morsels of some well written life lessons. The book has an overall positive, almost wholesome message that is presented hilariously.

Highly recommended.

I loved this book. Although, this is not surprising to me, because I love Mindy Kaling's body of work in general and as a whole. There has been nothing that she had been involved in that has not thoroughly enriched my life. I feel that this book should have some kind of life prerequisite for women 20-40. Regardless, please read this book men and especially women everywhere. If you enjoyed The Office or The Mindy Project ( or even if you didn't) I promise you won't be disappointed.

Great and quick read - Mindy is a funny writer (clearly) with clever and lively insights into the life of a young woman breaking into the professional world and growing up. She's not shy about going into depth about common insecurities and writes with such a conversational tone, I almost feel like I'm reading her journal - which I love. Bought the enhanced edition but found myself reading it more than listening to the extra audio clips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and hilarious! September 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition with Audio/Video|Verified Purchase
Mindy's musings were hilarious as well as insightful when you least expected it (unexpected because you think at first she's being tongue in cheek but then you realize she's imparting sound wisdom). I recommend it to anyone, male or female, who wants to read a funny person's take on life, success, and every variety of relationships. Also a good read to get a successful woman comedian/writer's perspective on her road to success.

This book was an entertaining read if you're really curious about Mindy Kaling's growing up and success. It doesn't offer as much advice as Amy Poehler's "Yes, Please" and some of her harsh convictions and swear-bys turn out false (Poehler's "great" marriage, etc). She offers interesting perspectives as a female, comedian, and Indian, although she'd probably be offended by that statement.
