Biography

It's all about fitting in, apparently. Remember the best (actually the worst) days of your life? Wear the wrong pair of trainers and your school-day would become a living hell. It's easy to become part of the crowd, to blend in seamlessly with everyone else. But not when you're wearing trainers bought from Castleford Market. When OCEANSIZE quietly crept into a Manchester music scene that was still… Read more in Amazon's Oceansize Store

Editorial Reviews

With their moody alt-rock sound, it might be tempting to lump this quintet in with British bands like Coldplay and Travis, who rushed to fill the void when Radiohead turned its back on commercial accessibility. But one listen to the Manchester-based band's sophomore LP makes it clear that they're charting a rockier course, with prog influences that run the gamut from Pink Floyd to Tool. The throbbing tribal pulse of "The Charm Offensive" recalls Jane's Addiction if they'd been fronted by Layne Staley, with stilted rhythms, shoegazing guitars, and harmonized vocals used to craft an arty epic that straddles the line dividing art rock and metal. They have an obvious understanding of the power of dynamics: "A Homage to a Shame" cranks up the distortion for a stutter-stepping, neck-snapping groove clearly designed to incite mosh pit ferocity, and then "Meredith" abandons that intensity in favor of melody, featuring a sultry beat topped with trippy layers of shimmering guitars and echoing vocals. But what's missing from Oceansize's sound is the sort of memorable lyrical or melodic hooks listeners can latch onto.

I heard a track of this on KEXP and decided to buy it. What an amazing adventure it is. I am a fairly hard core avant-progressive rock fan. My tastes run from Henry Cow to Thinking Plague to Sleepytime Gorilla museum to Meshuggah to Messaien. This album is nothing like any of those but it is not afraid to make full artistic use of advanced rhythms and harmonies. There have been plenty of modern bands to incorporate the strengths of prog rock (Mars Volta, Farquhar, Radiohead, Lush, etc). Oceansize seems to do it in a way that will make it palatable to the common MTv weaned ear. The harmonic tension and release toward the end of the CD is powerful. This deserves to be played at high volume on a great stereo (with real bass).

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect in every sense of the word., December 13, 2005

Oceansize's "Everyone Into Position" is perfect. It really is. From the churning, heavy drive of "Heaven Alive" to the beautiful "Music For a Nurse", you get a wonderful modern rock album sharpened perfectly to challange the listener and provide neverending entertainment.

There is ambience, there are heavy guitars. There are long songs, there is a mesmerizing three-guitar attack. What more could you ask for? Every song stands apart a piece of art, but when listened to in sequence, is especially awesome. And "Ornament / The Last Wrongs" is one of the best songs I have heard come out of a modern rock band. It's perfect.

This cd should be released in the states in February. So hold tight and get it then! Otherwise, you can pay 30 bucks for the import...(it is worth it...)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best this year!, December 22, 2005

This album is sensational. Standout track for me is "meredith" with it's seriously sinister feel and lyrics.
These guys really know how to put together deep, emotional landscapes primary driven by the 3 guitar attack.
Comparisons to Sigur ros in the instrumental regard are warranted. The vocals are slightly Daniel johns from silverchair in style. Far more understated. The drumming is excellent, extremely creative. This is worth every cent.
