Editorial Reviews

Review

"Jon's stories are wonderful. I would liken them to Jack Kerouac's, in that his stories make me want to seek adventure, damn the danger! I was so entertained I had to read his book straight through without stopping, so don't start to read it until you have several hours of free time..."

"This collection of short stories about the authors experience is an easy and fun reading for those that like to read about travelling adventures. I thoroughly enjoyed them and challenge the author to write his next collection."

"Few people can spin a tale with such vibrant colors. If you ever wanted to be an adventurer but just couldn't this is the book for you. A must read and one you can do in a short afternoon and then want to read it all over again. I nominate Jon White for Oprah's Book Club.'

From the Author

This, my first book was written at the request of friends and family for many years, hence the title! I really expected to sell maybe fifty copies total. But it gained traction on its own and has sold many times that since it was published in February 2012.
I enjoyed the writing experience, the words flowed into sentences, then paragraphs, then complete stories. I would find myself at four in the morning, quietly working on my laptop, while my wife slept through the night.
Using ship logs, old notes and emails, I re-lived the tales and adventures and apparently my writing style was embraced by people all over the world. I received emails from Australia, Norway, Argentina, even Afghanistan asking for a sequel. That is now available...

Everyone has a story - and this author shares a life that has been full of wonderful - and sometimes wild and crazy - experiences from all around the world.

Couldn't put it down! Excitement, adventure, strange lands and people - Cap'n Jon's done a lot in his life, and he writes each chapter so you can live it with him. This is no year to year chronology of a life - it jumps forward and backward, so you never know where he's going to take you next, yet you can't wait to find out. These are no yarns spun by the fireplace - these are true stories of an amazing character. Well worth it, and sure hope he writes more!

This was pretty funny in the beginning. I was very excited thinking I'd picked a winner. I had settled in for so much more, it sort of fizzled out for me three forths of the way. So, it is still worth a read for the strong start.

Cap'n Jon and I met in San Francisco in the late '90s and spent the better part of a decade sailing on each other's boats.
Separately, and at different times, we both sailed from California to the Caribbean via the Panama Canal. His well-written book evokes many memories of the places and adventures that befell each of us. His tales are captivating in a way only truthful telling can be. I highly recommend his book, whether you are a sailor or not. We are still in contact and he says a sequel is in the making. I can't wait!!
PS: The "John" in the "by John" is not part of my entry. It is being added automatically by the program and I have no way of deleting it...

After reading the reviews and reading all that Amazon allowed me to read online (approx. 14 pages), I knew that this was a book for me. I enjoy reading. One of the biggest problems I seem to encounter is that I can't read till late in the evening and if I'm not able to read the entire book within a short time, it appears I forgot what I read and have to go back. Not so with Jonathan's book, since each chapter is it's own short story, which makes it a truly easy read. I am not an adventurous person, more of a scaredy cat, so this book was really a great read. It was exciting and took me to places I've never been before. I, too, now wonder what it was they saw in that river in Florida. Can't wait for your sequel.

I was so entertained I had to read his book straight through without stopping, so don't start to read it until you have several hours of free time...otherwise you just might miss your plane!
I love the way Jon takes the reader back and forth in time and place, just the way these stories would be told over dinner or a few beers...with Jim Morrison.

the anecdotes were very entertaining; in some cases, frightening. to have traveled the world waiting to meet your new best friends is a refreshing way to live on this cynical and weary planet. he came, he sailed, he conquered.
