Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9-This breezy book looks at a number of different theories about how birth order affects people and presents some exceptions to the rule. The examples are precise enough so that readers can easily relate to the situations described. Bulleted lists of characteristics expected because of birth order facilitate easy scanning. Shadowed boxes in each chapter list famous people who fit into particular birth-order groups. The book is a quick read with high-interest, low-vocabulary "stories." Readers will find themselves nodding their heads in agreement as the theories are based on extensive study and popular belief, often helping youngsters to affirm their perceptions of self, family, and friends. Black-and-white and full-color photographs appear throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book, July 16, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Everything You Need to Know About Birth Order (Need to Know Library) (Library Binding)
I liked this book because I learned a lot about birth order and how where you are born in your family changes how you are. I'm the youngest child and some of what they said in the book is really true. I never really thought about it before but it does matter about birth order. I liked the stories in the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great, October 16, 2003
This review is from: Everything You Need to Know About Birth Order (Need to Know Library) (Library Binding)
This book is a pretty good introduction to the subject of birth order, the theory that what your position is within the constellation of the children of a family (first born, etc.) affects the development of your personality. Written for the younger reader, the book covers a number of the basic concepts of the theory, and contains a number of stories of real people telling how their birth order affected their development.

This is a good book, but not a great one. It gives the feeling for the subject, but is far too short to be of any practical use. Also, I did find that the author felt free to inject her prejudices into the book (e.g. treating boys and girls differently is automatically sexist). Overall, I give this book a guarded recommendation.
