4.0 out of 5 stars The only book that will help you on your journey to locs
I give my review this title because i haven't seen any other book available that will help anyone thinking of locking their hair the way this one offers to. It took me a year or so to make my decision and this book is one of the reasons that helped carry me along in my journey. It dispells all misconceptions about locks..and theres nothing dreadful about our hair...

This review is from: Everything You Need to Know About Hairlocking, Dread, African & Nubian Locks (Paperback)
eventhough it contains very little information about dreadlocks, and the majority of the information that it DOES contain is erroneous, incomplete, or simply made up by the author and her clique. She is apparently ignorant of the fact that dreadlocks date back to the beginning of time in ALL cultures, not just black culture (for example, ancient celtic warriors wore dreads, as did the Maoris of New Zeland), although she makes up for this in part by classifying dread-wearers such as the Shivites of India as "african". This is an even greater pity considering that THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE originated in Ethiopia, a fact she is ignorant of, eventhough it would support some of her claims. (Should I tell her that Bob Marley's father was white?) It is a damn shame to see a book like this used to perpetuate the isms and scims of Babylon (and hustle customers into her hair salon), rather than to promote the upful and positive dread vibe and the truth of Rastafari. If this book goes into a second printing it should be retitled: Everything My Guru And I made Up About Hairlocking (Including The Awkward And Inarticulate Term "Locktician").

2.0 out of 5 stars everything i wanted to know "NOT", September 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Everything You Need to Know About Hairlocking, Dread, African & Nubian Locks (Paperback)
This was an amusing little book that was about a 20 min read start to finish.(I'm by no means a speed reader. Too much quasi-spiritual blah blah and not what I wanted to know. What I wanted to know was much more in the way of technical information and illustration, and nice photos. Nice try trying to market everything from products, to videos, classes etc etc etc. In a word this book was "boring".

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless dribble, February 15, 2001

This review is from: Everything You Need to Know About Hairlocking, Dread, African & Nubian Locks (Paperback)
If you are in the process of locking or thinking about locking, this book will provide no useful information as to how to go about it. The author is more concerned with imparting her concept of spirituality rather than facts. It takes about an hour to read through this mess, and I'm still wondering what the 40 commandments of MAAT have to do with locking ones hair. What I was looking for was some real information regarding starting, maintaining and caring for locs, types of products to use (other than the authors own). No wonder this mess is out of print. The entire discussion on coiled hair as antennae and electromagnetic fields was entirely too comical!

I give my review this title because i haven't seen any other book available that will help anyone thinking of locking their hair the way this one offers to. It took me a year or so to make my decision and this book is one of the reasons that helped carry me along in my journey. It dispells all misconceptions about locks..and theres nothing dreadful about our hair. Gives a brief history with pictures and all. If you're looking for the how-tos or any fashion aspect of locking hair then this book is not for you. Its about knowledge, acceptance and preparing yourself for the changes that will catapult you into your path. On my first visit, my loctician handed me this book and i was proud to say that i had already read it..(didnt say how many times) The only problem i had with the book is that it was too short. It left me wanting more, but then I suppose thats a good thing. My Thanks to Sister Evans!

3.0 out of 5 stars Wanted - more info. on hairlocking!, May 12, 1998
By A Customer
I was very excited when I found that this book was available (I couldn't find it in a title or subject search, only using an author search.). I excitedly read through the entire book in less than a day. I was disappointed that despite the title including the word "Everything" , most of the book dealt with the spiritual meaning the author believed was a part of the hairlocking process. A lot of emphasis was also placed on dispelling myths about locks. Very little of the book described the actual process of hairlocking and caring for and maintaining locks, especially if one does not live close to a 'locktician'. Though the book gave interesting information on spirituality and facts about locks, I think the title made for a disappointing book. I hope that Ms. Evans will have a second edition that goes in depth as to how one should groom and care for locked hair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed and precise, May 9, 1999
By A Customer
I found this book to be very detailed, precise and thorough, to say the least. If you are someone interested in how to start and MAINTAIN locks, as well as learning the history of locks, this is the book for you. I also recommend that anyone who considers themselves to be a Natural Hair Care Professional, should have this material in their reference library. This is also excellent reading for someone who is trying to decide wether to lock or not to lock. I think it will convince you to "JUST DO IT".

1.0 out of 5 stars Only contains psychological information, April 17, 1999
By
This review is from: Everything You Need to Know About Hairlocking, Dread, African & Nubian Locks (Paperback)
This book is mainly about spiritual information and African aspects of locks. It is strong on these matters but in no way 'everything you wanted to know'. Hardly anything of what I wanted to know. Instead check website at http://www.csd.uu.se/~d97hah/dreadlocks.html for allround information.

In review of Sister Nekhena Evan's book; I found it to be very insightful and indepth with regard to the meaning and understanding of ones desire to Lock. I recommend it to those that need to mentally prepare and be knowledgable about their decision.

My journey begins today (3/24/99)

5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book on locking your hair, March 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Everything You Need to Know About Hairlocking, Dread, African & Nubian Locks (Paperback)
I have read sister evans' book and if you are looking for a spiritual path for locking your hair (as oppossed to a fashion path) this is the book for you. The only negative comment I have is that the book is too short, and the photos should be in color. When people ask me why I locked my hair, I refer them to the book. When my wife and my sister wanted to lock their hair I gave them copies of the book. I love this book, I love the spirit that this sister exudes. Hotep

1.0 out of 5 stars It's a Lock History Book, not a Locking Book, February 23, 1999
By A Customer
[actual rating: 1/8 a star] I wouldn't recommend this book (actually, it's more than a pamphlet) to anyone who's looking for information on lock care/how to lock. I skimmed it looking for essential info & then decided to read it because surely info on lock care had to be in there somewhere and maybe I missed it. But, no. It's OK if you're trying to build an African hair book collection and want to include it; but for those of you who are looking for some hard core practical lock care info -- it ain't in this book. I especially don't appreciate the title of the book; it's truly deceptive to those who may only read it and spend the money thinking it's going to help. I always want to support brotha & sistah writers, but I don't like to give my money away, particulary when writers cook up titles that hook those who don't have immediate access to the book.
