From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up-- Johnson's book will help young people through the difficult period following their parents' divorce, when they are likely to experience various emotional and physical reactions and may be asked to take sides. A final summary chapter brings all the information together and serves as a review and reinforcement of essential areas and behaviors discussed. This brief book includes the essentials, and stresses communication and understanding as keys to a happy and emotionally successful life following divorce. Information is presented in a clear and straightforward manner with fictionalized incidents showing young adult reactions to different familial scenarios. With a large typeface, line spacing between paragraphs, and generous black-and-white and color photographs peppered throughout, the information appears visually nonthreatening and inviting. Similar tactics are employed in Smoking. Information is centered on why people start smoking, health risks, cigarette advertising, peer pressure, nicotine addiction, and the difficulties involved in "breaking the habit." A quiz aids in decision making on several of the above. These are worthwhile titles, as they fill the hi/lo gap in problematic areas that many teens face, but they will need proper referrals and recommendations to ensure that they reach the right audience. --Celia A.
