4.0 out of 5 stars Welcome Back Alanis!, June 15, 2004

This review is from: Everything (Audio CD)
Alanis Morissette made her welcome return to the music scene in May 2004 with her fourth proper studio album, and first in more than two years. It was called "So-Called Chaos," and in my opinion is the best album of the year to date! This will probably not be the case by the end of the year, but you never know! Being the massive fan of Alanis that I am (yeah, my Amazon nick name is influenced by her as I consider myself to be a somewhat jagged teenager - not the norm!), I anticipated the release of her new album months before and practically counted down the days. I wasn't expecting anything to top "Jagged Little Pill" and "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" in terms of genius and breaking ground, but still my expectations were high, so you can imagine my disappointment when I first heard "Everything!"

Everything was the first single to be released from the album, and when I first heard it I really wasn't impressed much. The song had a good pace and a fairly catchy rhythm, but on the whole it seemed a bit monotonous and drab for my liking. Since then, however, the song has definitely grown on me and I now really like it. I wouldn't consider it one of Alanis' best songs - infact, I don't even think I'd put it in my list of Top 20 Alanis Songs Ever, if such a list existed...

Everything starts off with a striking guitar before Alanis starts off the first verse on the 13th second, "I can be an a**hole of the grandest kind. I can withstand like it's going out of style. I can be the moodiest baby and you've never met anyone who is as negative as I am sometimes. I am the wisest woman you've ever met. I am the kindest soul with whom you've connected. I have the bravest heart that you've ever seen and you've never met anyone who is as positive as I am sometimes." The song picks up paces and Alanis sings the chorus, "You see everything, you see every part. You see all my light and you love my dark. You dig everything of which I'm ashamed. There's not anything to which you can't relate. And you're still here."

Alanis then sings the second verse, "I blame everyone else, not my own partaking. My passive aggressive-ness can be devastating. I'm terrified and mistrusting and you've never met anyone who is as closed down as I am sometimes." Alanis then sings the chorus once more, before she moves into the bridge, which I think is the best part of the song. The music is louder and more in tune, as Alanis sings, "What I resist persists and speaks louder than I know. What I resist you love no matter how low or high I go." The song then drops as Alanis sings, "I'm the funniest woman that you've ever known. I am the dullest woman that you've ever known. I'm the most gorgeous woman that you've known and you've never met anyone as everything as I am sometimes." Alanis then moves back into the chorus which she repeats again, with more of her trademark wails that just make the song even more beautiful.

The video to Everything is similar to the first part of Madonna's "Don't Tell Me." It is filmed in one continuous piece, with Alanis in the middle and people who make minor impressions on her throughout her walk down a desolate road. The song itself is a real grower and may not grab you instantly like (say for example) "Hands Clean" did, but if you listen to it more, you'll definitely appreciate it. I respect this song for its honesty more than anything else. Mr. Reynolds has certainly had a big impact upon Alanis and her life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything, July 27, 2004

I was so excited to get this single. I just love the cover. You should check out the cover of Out Is Through. Whoever took that picture and whoever was in charge of that outfit; they knew what they were doing. I just love it. Same here, but, there are no clothes. Just her beautiful and happy face.

Happy. She's finally happy. I'm so... LOL. Happy for her. It upsets me a great deal though, that people miss her being angry. Nevermind. If I get too into how I feel about that, I'm just wasting my time writing this review because profanity is not allowed on this site.

OK. When I first heard Everything, it was ready for download before the album, So-Called Chaos, came out. Which was awesome. At first, I was like, eh. That was before it finished downloading. Then, when I heard the song. I would not stop listening to it. I would be so excited to get home from school just so I can listen to this beautiful song of loving someone for their good and bad, light and dark. I love the music video too.

So Unsexy was one of my favorite songs from her previous album, Under Rug Swept. It was pretty interesting and cool to listen to this song from the Vancouver Session. When you're in a bubbly/perky/happy mood, it's a good song to listen to, playing in the background.

Listening to Everything from the Vancouver Session almost made me cry. It's not a sad song or anything. It's just her voice. My god, it is beautiful. This is one of those songs that I like to listen to when I want to get lost. You know? Get lost, like IN the song, in the voice.

There is not really that much to say. It's a pretty darn good single. Short, but very good. I love it a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alanis does it again, May 10, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Everything (Audio CD)
While Everything might not be her strongest ever single, it certainly is a great song. The real reasonn to pick up this single are the b-sides. The "Vancouver Sessions" are beatufuil acoustic versions of her songs, and the video for Everything is pretty dang cool. I would not only recomend this single, but also the part 2. It contains a version of Precious Illusions that is awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars "EVERYTHING" We Wanted From Alanis, June 26, 2004

Alanis is one of the most important women in musical industry, today, and that's not from my point of view, but a general opinion.

She has grown stronger and stronger over the years, and starting with her 30-million-copies-selling "Jagged Little Pill" to her most recent "So-Called Chaos",Alanis has shared with us, her personal experiences, that in a magical way, touch our hearts and talk to our souls.

In this song, "Everything", we see Alanis in her most positive attemp to understand life, to day. She explains all those things that you feel when you are in love. All these feelings of redemption, love, salvation, and finally, the feeling that you are accepted, not in spite of but with all your faults, all your problems and worries.
It'a really great song, one of the best Alanis ever wrote.I love the way the song starts with the synthesizer and each musical instrument is added every few seconds. It really makes you feel like you are in an emotional journey, starting low, reaching the top, and down again.

The cd-single also contains the video for the song, which, without being something extremely great is a good visualisation of an awsome song.

Believe me, it's one of the best things you can buy today, with all those Alanis wannabies (aka Avril,Pink, etc).

I really don't know what else to say, except, what are you still doing there??
GO BUY THE CD.

OHH!!! ALSO THE ALBUM IS GREAT, but read my review for more details on the album.

Thank you Alanis, you really mean ,"EVERYTHING" to us.
Peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Everything" Shines, May 10, 2004

This song is amazing. It's not the typical Alanis I've come to expect from past releases like "Under Rug Swept" and "Jagged Little Pill".

"Everything" focuses on being loved by someone who overlooks your faults to see the true beauty within. This is a beautiful balled, and hopefully the album ("So-Called Chaos") will live up to it's predecessors.

This CD contains an enhanced track with the "Everything" video. Of all Alanis' videos, I'd personally rank it in the bottom three. It's just the new short-haird Alanis walking toward the camera from down the street for three and a half minutes, being approached by different people in her life. However, the video content also has absolutely nothing to do with the song itself. You can see the video without buying this CD by going to www.alanismorissette.com If you're looking to buy this CD just for the video, save your money until you've seen the video somewhere else for free.

Above all, the song is great. Highly recommended.

well or at least a song called Everything.
1. radio edit, wich hasn't chart (and i think it won't chart)
2. so unsexy (from the Under Rug Swept Album) nice live version
alanis has an incredible voice live
3. Everything (acoustic) excellent interpretation
4. THE VIDEO. This video IS NOT an original idea, the first video with this concept is the Spain's group JARABE DE PALO, and you can see the lead singer from this band on the beginning of this video. he is the one who cuts Alanis hair, and hi has a shirt that says BONITO, that's the name of the song that was the video what i'm talking about, that video was released in feb/mar 2003
and Alanis loved that video so that/s why she made it on her own.

PS SKQUINTO, I WANT TO CHAT WITH U, HOW CAN WE MEET??
