5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Baby Shower Gift!
This easy-to-read guide kept me turning the pages. The author uniquely presents all sides of each parenting issue, backing each up with real-mom testimony. She gives her readers credit to make the choices that are right for them, without clobbering them over the head with her own opinions. This is a great book to read before the baby comes -- my only complaint was the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous Advice, June 8, 2005
This review is from: The Everything Baby's First Year Book: Complete Practical Advice to Get You and Baby Through the First 12 Months (Everything (Parenting)) (Paperback)
I am a nurse practioner in pediatrics. This book was brought to my attention recently by two of my patients mothers. She had brought her 4 month old baby into my office because she had burns on the inside of her mouth. The burns had come from microwaving infant formula. She had told me that she had read in this book that even though the can said not to use a microwave the book had said to go ahead and do it because all formula-feeding moms do.Another mother had told me that her son had choked on the hair from a make-up brush the other night and she also said that she had read in this book that make-up brushes are "safe" toys. So i asked her to bring me the book if possible, she did and sure enough there it was, along with other dangerous and well lets say silly advice. Her "sickness and health" chapter is by far the worst. Never in the 12 years Ive been practicing that Ive heard of treating pinkeye by squirting breastmilk in your infants eye. Or squirting breastmilk up a babies nose to fight a cold. I mean it won't hurt them but it certainly won't help either. However some advice is dangerous and should not be followed, especially the medical advice she gives. Remember this woman IS NOT A DOCTOR! Or even close to being one. I am appalled that she thinks that just because she has 3 children that makes her an expert over pediatricians, research scientists and other professionals. Who does she thinks she is! This book is so packed with bad advice I don't even have enough space to list it all(another reviewer did however). Bottom line, use your instincts, listen to your doctor and if you own this book...throw it away!

She gives her readers credit to make the choices that are right for them, without clobbering them over the head with her own opinions. This is a great book to read before the baby comes -- my only complaint was the placement of a chapter near the end on a mother's need to take care of herself -- it should be an early chapter! The book also offers excellent tips for traveling with babies, which I've not seen elsewhere. All in all, a wonderful read, comprehensive and entertaining.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!!!!, June 22, 2011
This review is from: The Everything Baby's First Year Book: Complete Practical Advice to Get You and Baby Through the First 12 Months (Everything (Parenting)) (Paperback)
A relative gave us this book as a gift and I just tossed it in the trash. I started thinking something was up when I was reading the chapter on sleep this morning and it stressed the importance of having the baby sleep in bed with you. The American Academy of Pediatrics has stressed since 2000 (this book was published in 2002!) that baby should not be in bed with her parents! I mean this is down right deadly advice that the author is giving and it's shameful that it is still on the market.

This book is the best. I bought it and started reading it before I had my daughter. Now she's almost five months old and I'm still using for ideas, methods, and advice. I love it and I have been and will continue to recommend it to all new parents.

Written with the sense of Humor that only a Mother can have, this book is a must for new (as well as) second, third AND fourth time Mom's. Tekla's advice is steeped in the wisdom of a modern day Mom...The advice is practical and very very hip. She brings a keen sense of humor to every day issues.

The book is way cool...I could really relate !

Irma Bombeck would have loved this book !

5.0 out of 5 stars How did she know my story??, March 18, 2005
This review is from: The Everything Baby's First Year Book: Complete Practical Advice to Get You and Baby Through the First 12 Months (Everything (Parenting)) (Paperback)
This is the first time I have ever seen a book which talks about discrimination against moms who use bottles. As a mother of three who tried desperately to breastfeed each time, but was never able to produce enough milk, I really appreciate this book. Often when I pulled out a bottle around groups of mothers, I was treated as if I was doing something wrong. I always felt the need to go through my whole story; telling how hard I had tried, explaining that I was still giving my babies as much breast milk as possible, but insisting that I needed to supplement. It was very difficult. I was always treated as if I must have done something wrong or breastfeeding would have gone perfectly. I'm very lucky I didn't injure my first child by waiting a month to supplement. This was the advice given by my local breastfeeding support group. I'm very thankful to Ms. Nee for addressing this issue. It is important for new mothers to have all of the facts about breastfeeding.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for new mothers...., February 12, 2002

This review is from: The Everything Baby's First Year Book: Complete Practical Advice to Get You and Baby Through the First 12 Months (Everything (Parenting)) (Paperback)
Absolutely delightful book! I bought this yesterday and have not yet put it down. She is both informative and witty and it's a pleasure to read. She shares some wonderful tips for relieving pain after childbirth to breastfeeding to getting the baby to sleep. It's WONDERFUL. I cannot recommend this book more strongly for anyone embarking on motherhood. She answers questions I didn't even think about asking yet, and some I just didn't know HOW to ask!! Buy it! You won't regret it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Advice in this horrible book will cost you if you follow it., March 16, 2005
By
This review is from: The Everything Baby's First Year Book: Complete Practical Advice to Get You and Baby Through the First 12 Months (Everything (Parenting)) (Paperback)
The cover of this book says "practical advice" but let me tell you her advice is useless, dangerous and sometimes just nuts!! For example:

1. Like the other reviewer said she says thats its perfectly fine to microwave formula when every can of formula says clearly not to because it can BURN YOUR BABY!!

2: She also says that if you squirt breastmilk up a babies nose it will kill a cold.

3: Also she states that breastmilk kills cancer.

4: Women who bottlefeed are being forced to feed their babies in bathrooms out of fear because breastfeeding moms give them nasty looks and comments.

5: You can put a colicky baby in a bouncer on top of a dryer to calm them down. Dangerous!

6: "Babies with colic are often given Levsin an anti-spasmatic drug." Yeah maybe in the 70's its not given anymore because its been found to cause developmental problems.

7: Shes says its okay to go ahead and have intercourse again after birth as long you are not bleeding. I was acually dumb enough listen to this(i had just started reading it though) well I popped the stiches and now have painful scar tissue that will hurt for the rest of my life.

8: Shes says inducing your baby into sleep with Benadryl will make an airplane flight a lot easier on you. Oh well then why don't we do that all the time. Oprah's on? give the baby Benadryl so you won't be disturbed. That one appalled me.

9: She won't give her kids Tylenol until their fevers are up to 103. Strange she will tranquilize her babies on airplanes just so she doesn't have to deal with them yet when her babies have high fevers she waits on the tylenol making it sound like shes sooooo concerned about giving her kids drugs. Please!

10. Shes says to wait longer than 6 months to start solids. When I told my pediatrician this she was shocked. Babies need a nutrional boost at 6 months and therefore should be starting too eat solids by around 4 months.

Well there is 10 examples and believe me i could give you 100. Only buy this book for a good laugh not for "practical" advice. Because you might learn the hard way like i did.
