Gr 6 Up--A book about physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, focusing on dating relationships and parental violence against children. The author assures readers that abuse is the fault of the perpetrator alone, and stresses that the victim must take action since the abuse will continue unless professional intervention takes place. Kinstlinger-Bruhn acknowledges that deciding to leave a dangerous and negative relationship is never easy. Supportive and positive, she suggests practical strategies for self-protection and plans for escape and for the future. This is an intelligent and informative work, but it is flawed. At times, the text is repetitive. Posed black-and-white photos add nothing. More seriously, the author fails to mention that "No Contact Orders" and "Orders of Protection," which are discussed in the context of victims' rights in criminal and civil law, are often flouted with lethal results. Also, statistics and statements that may require elaboration lack sources. Keith Greenberg's Family Abuse (21st Century Bks., 1995) offers a slightly broader treatment of domestic violence, as it touches on battered women and elder neglect. However, Greenberg appears to accept and endorse the phenomenon of recovered memory, which has been increasingly questioned.
