This review is from: The Everything College Survival Book; From Social Life to Study Skills-Everything You Need To Know To Fit Right In-Before You're a Senior! (Paperback)
The book covered all the basic topics but it was very simple. It did not offer me any real advice but simply an overview of the college experience. The book was ugly to read and too simple. If someone has absolutely no idea what to expect in college then this book is a good start but otherwise people should shop for something else. I don't think it worth too much of anyones time or money.

A Factory Written Book,

Honestly, as college books go, this one is ok. It really does not tell you * everything* about college. It really is just another book that fills a hole in the publisher's catalog. There is an "Everything" book on almost every topic possible. Would you really want to purchase a book on a specific subject matter from a company that also makes books on such topics as Wine Tastings, and An Art Appreciation? This book will teach you the basics, nothing more. If you really want your college freshmen to get the meat and potatoes of the experience you would be better served buying them: * Confessions of a College Freshman: A Survival Guide for Dorm Life, Biology Lab, the Cafeteria, and Other First-Year Adventures * College 101: The Books Your College Does Not Want You To Read (ISBN: 0966412206) These two books, although from two different perspectives, give an honest first person point-of-view of what a college freshman should expect. The emphasis here is on "learn from my mistakes" not "my publisher asked me to write a how-to guide for the college market, since my how-to guide on growing vegetables was so successful" Besides, College 101 is universally despised by campus bookstore clerks across the country. That has to be a fantastic endorsement! :-)

Useful Information Here,

There is a lot of useful info here. Most of it could probably be found in other places though. The one gripe is there's a lot of stuff that seems to be an ad for something. Also, sections such as the 'amusement park' and 'spring break' ones are basically a list of "What has good name recognition", making no effort to point out places that are actually good. Of course, that is just a small part of this book.

From silly things like laundry, to really smart things like when to study and when to party, and am very glad I had this book when I walked in my dorm.

As a college freshman this fall, I looked around for some good books on advice and making my transition a bit more smoother than my high school enterance.
Unfortunately - this book miserably fails at it. First off, the book comes off as an informercial for various products that the author cleverly hocks near the end of each chapter [hey - you need an organizer and go to this website and buy one for this low price !!] and I wondered if Kevin Trudeau was a ghostwriter for this book... Also in 2005, it's technically obsolete. Most teenagers currently integrate technology into our lives via the internet, cell phones, instant messaging, and digital audio players. However, the book is still in 1999 with recommending a pentium II for the top of the line. The entire information on the computer/tech chapter is moot and don't bother reading it. The other chapter mentions very common studying and time-management techniques and information that you already know or could find out if you simply asked your college admissions or guidance counselor/academic advisor. For real advice, go up to some random students while you're touring at college and ask; or for literature, choose the recommendations that the 'fellow reader' described.

I guess this is a good all in one guide, but if you've been looking at various sources for college advice, i.e. online, there's probably nothing in here you don't know. Flip through it at the bookstore, then leave it there. Instead, read the cal newport study books. now there's some useful stuff.
