Barenboim - the philosopher, artist, humanitarian, musician - emerges full-strength as never before. As a musician he is world-famous. As a writer, he is ever so thoughtful, and engaging. He requires the reader to be an intellectual, with an open mind and heart. It is a book that musicians and non-musicians can read, it is for people who are fascinated with the connections between music and life, music and government, music and contentment. As a musician myself, I thought the entire book will be devoted to these subjects. However, a large portion is devoted to the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. This fact makes for a far less engaging music book (even though the orchestra is a most remarkable and valuable project). The first, and most valuable, section of the work is devoted to music. The middle, and largest, section is devoted to the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. The last section quotes Barenboim's articles on various subjects. The most interesting article is about Mozart - it brings out Barenboim's essence as a musician and person. He comes out as a genuine, dedicated musician whose life is dedicated to music and spreading its positive influence on others. In another article he criticizes the period instrument movement and calls it "idiotic".
Overall, despite the large portion that deals with politics and his orchestra project, this is a most revealing book about music and life. A philosophical work, that will dramatically enrich its reader.

A must read book for any musician, educator, human being... Barenboim is completely committed to the reader the entire time, coaching and guiding in every page. Reading this book felt like a masterclass.

I like how Daniel Barenboin make reflections of how music relates to human activities and development in many ways you have never think of.

It takes the musical experience to a intelectual level but with very easy to understand examples.
