The Best Little "Cookie Book" for Dogs!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Everything Cooking for Dogs Book: 150 Quick and Easy Healthy Recipes Your Dog Will Bark For (Everything: Cooking) (Paperback)
I purchased this recipe book to make homemade dog biscuits after the tainted pet food scare, and when I found my new Scnoodle puppy didn't like the store bought brands. The recipes have all the ingredients you have on hand in your kitchen, and are incredibly easy to make. The cookies I baked worked great during the "training" phase with my dog, they were excellent "reward" snacks when she was learning. They smell great when baking them. I also use chicken broth instead of water in the recipes and they add I think a whole lot more flavor for the dog. The other thing that makes it such a great book, is that when you're in a hurry and have the likes of a Bake Sale that you have to contribute to, each recipe makes a large batch, and when they were all bagged up, they actually helped make a decent dollar when others see that all natural ingredients have been used.

Good introduction but not for finicky eaters,

I am looking for a cookbook for my dog who is 3lbs and is a very finicky eater. I was hoping to find recipes that she would enjoy, but a recipe that calls for chicken, olive oil, chicken broth, and store bought barbecue sauce isn't a creative enough recipe for a dog that won't eat anything...However, this book is good for beginner cooks and it has good warnings of what is poisonous to dogs and a bit of nutrition advice that has been helpful.

I got this book because my newly adopted dog has terrible food allergies. I am cooking her her own food to save money, because the food the vet gave me was so expensive. The recipes in this book were not made to serve as your dogs only food, just to treat them over kibble. They do not provide you with any vitamin and nutrietion information for feeding the food to the dogs. That being said, there are alot of fun recipes in the book to treat your dog with.

not what I expected,

I was hoping for full recipes which I could feed my dog in place of dog food. Instead, this book suggests the recipes as an addition to dog food. The recipes call for a lot of organic products and a few items which I find questionable feeding to a dog. Overall, not a purchase I would make again.

I wanted to cook real food for my lab. This book is very good. A big help in letting me know how to get started. Pearl, that is my lab's name. She loves her new way of eating. She looks better, has lost some weight, which she need to do. She has more energy. The book will guide you in preparing a well rounded diet for your beloved pet.

Great Book, Good For Picky Eaters,

My chihuahua/terrier pup is pretty picky, and I've made a lot of things that he just turns up his nose at. However, the first two recipes in this book were a huge success, and even cutting the recipe by half makes a pretty decent amount. The directions are easy to read, easy to follow, and easy to swap out and substitute ingredients once you have the basic nuts and bolts of the recipe down. All in all, a great learning tool, and recommended to all interested in bettering their dogs diet.

When a book is as riddled with errors, omissions and typos as this one, it calls into question the credibility of the whole text.
Too many other sources question the wisdom of ingredients used in this book, e.g., garlic, salt, etc. On the other hand, if you pick carefully through the recipes, there are a few which are servicable and can be adapted to the real world. I actually appreciate the idea of using both homemade and commercial foods ... most dog owners aren't nutritionists, and this provides balance and suggestions for improving (but not replacing) a commerical diet. An area I found confusing was the author's description of cooking techniques: both flash-frying (which the author describes as taking place on very high heat) and gently sauteeing take place over the same medium heat. What's the difference? All-in-all, this book was only worth the very low used price I paid, and wouldn't have been worth the new price.

I would reccommend this book to all you dog lovers out there who are concerned with the preservatives and articicial colorings that are contained in too many dog foods.
