This travel guide is an extremely general guide to the sights of Northern California and Lake Tahoe. I bought it because we will be going to Lake Tahoe for a week and this guide has barely 20 pages covering the entire Lake Tahoe and Reno region. I could name more attractions off the top of my head than is covered by this book.

There are only a couple attractions listed for each city with very brief descriptions. I don't know why the writer chose the ones that were listed because I could think of many better places to go in some of the cities that I have been to. It doesn't really give me confidence in the rest of the book.

The editing of this book is very sloppy. Six pages of the Lake Tahoe section were mistakenly swapped with the Gold Country section. I wonder what else is wrong if they were unable to catch such an obvious mistake.

As for the family aspect of this, many of the restaurants listed in this guide that I am familiar with are not even that family-friendly. They tend to be on the fancy high-end side, restaurants that I wouldn't even take my well-behaved kids to dine. Just glancing at other restaurants in areas unfamiliar to me, I notice many wine bars and resort restaurants, not exactly family vacations destinations.

I guess if you have no idea what is in Northern California, this book might be helpful, but you would be much better off with the free guide that your local AAA gives out.
