Many people hate the Vivian Girls. This is because they really do have this whole hipster way about them that seems really phony and forced. This has caused their music to be lumped into this sort of category as well. I saw an interview where they literally said "normal people suck" and other offensive things. This at first angered me and I thought they were completely out of touch and just trying to hard to be too cool for school. Then I realized that I dont listen to music because the musicians are good people. No, I listen to music because it sounds good, and this album sounds great! It is a collection of upbeat fast paced songs that flow seemlessly with dreamy vocals that warm the heart. It reminds one of a time when punk rock was just plain better than it is today. I think this is the biggest reason this album does not get the respect it deserves. By this I mean that Vivian Girls act and dress to appeal to indie/hipster crowd but their music says something else about them. Their music sounds legitamtely like punk, so I think too many people listen to them with the wrong idea in their mind. They are'nt the first band to piss off their fans and certainly wont be the last, so everyone just get over the fact that they just annoy the hell out of everyone. A great listen and I highly recommend!

I got this album after after hearing samples of the Surfin Away\Second Date single. i am blown away by the song writing and the energy. The Vivian Girls are playing two shows in Austin TX today (an in-store at Waterloo and later at Red7) and I have a feeling my level of fandom will be through the roof after seeing them live. check out "tension" , "the end", and "the desert" from this cd and you'll see what the fuss is about. i have total faith in this band.

Love 'em of hate 'em, Vivian Girls are not here to waste your time. Like their delinquent punk and 60s girl-group forebears, they know that two minutes is quite enough time in which to blast out a song when necessary (four of these 13 songs clock in around or below the two minute mark; only one stretches more than four minutes). This, their second album, packs a lot of frenetic drumming, guitar playing and harmonizing into its 36-minute running time. Try it you might like it. And it won't take you long to find out.
