About the Author

Catherine Abbott (British Columbia, Canada) grew up on a farm in Northern Alberta. She grew vegetables in her suburban backyard until 2000, when she and her husband decided to make a lifestyle change and started a small-scale vegetable farm. She now grows fabulous vegetables that she sells in her local community. She also teaches gardening classes, and has developed a popular website called www.your-vegetable-gardening-helper.com.

Meghan Shinn (Cincinnati, OH) is the editor of Horticulture, a national magazine for avid home gardeners. Currently her plant-related pursuits are limited to container gardening, as she and her husband have only an apartment patio for outdoor space. They make the most of it with pots full of annuals and veggies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Good Information January 23, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is the year I've decided I'm going to seriously grow a vegetable garden. However I know it's alot of work and I didn't want to waste my efforts so I decided to get educated first. Got this as a library book and I was so impressed with it that I purchased a copy for myself. She talks about planning your garden (and warns first timers not to get too rambunctious). But the part I liked best was the detail of various vegetables - optimum growing conditions, when to plant and what to do right to get them coming out of the ground as good as you are hoping. And it includes a multitude of vegetable options - not just your standard beans, tomatoes and cucumbers. I found this to be a great reference book I will continue to use as long as I garden, that's why I bought my own copy. I would recommend this to someone who is just starting out or is looking to expand their gardens with some new and different plantings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Veggie Gardening Beginner Book January 29, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Spring of 2012 will be my first attempt at growing more than one plant at a time. I wanted to do a small vegetable garden, but I wanted to do it right. After checking out a few books at my local library, I setteled on this book as the one to purchase to guide be through the process. It is easy to understand, offers great advise for garden design and layout, and breaks down what each veggie plant will need to be a happy, productive plant. I cannot wait to see what comes up in my graden this spring and summer!
If you are beginning gardener, this is definatly a resource you want to have on hand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really a good basic book on vegetable gardening April 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
We have grown a vegetable garden every year for over 35 years now. So we have a lot of experience. But it's always good to learn new techniques and tips, and I definitely found a few new ideas in this book. I liked the section on crop rotation. The individual vegetable sections is very good. And this is one main-stream vegetable gardening book that actually addresses the benefits of companion planting, which is something we've practiced for more than 2 decades now (and yes, it really does work).

There is a nod to Square Foot gardening in the section about raised beds, but if you really want to get into SF garden, please order that specific book, as the little section in this one is too general. All in all, this is a REALLY good book to get anyone who is interested a wonderful start in vegetable gardening. My only "huh" moment was the recipe section -not sure why it's in there, but I guess it isn't hurting anything. I have the book as a Kindle edition. It reads GREAT on the PC, and pretty good on my droid [but the tables are wonky]. I haven't dragged out the actual Kindle to look at it yet. I'm sure the paper book is fine, too - I just like electronics.
