Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The daily newspaper funny pages haven't been for a long, long time. So thank god for the Web, where the scabrous likes of Neil Swaab's Mr. Wiggles, David Rees' Get Your War On, Chris Onstad's Achewood, and That Darn Chauncey by one Mr. Henderson have thrived enough to provoke book collections. Chauncey and company are mostly ovals containing two more ovals for eyes. The females are crowned with bows. Chauncey's distaff is Shelia (or, once or twice, Sheila), he has a nephew and niece, and there's also a Chinese pig made out of rectangles, circles, and a triangle. The characters' relationships with one another, in the occasional "Ask Professor Science" episode, and with some extortionist Girl Scouts, are fraught with exploitation, cruelty, insensitivity, cowardice, and bad thoughts. Hence, each three-panel strip stands a good chance of being hilarious. To be sure, this is gag cartooning, with everything leading up to the inevitable punch line. Fortunately, Henderson's good at punch lines; try this apothegm: "The road to Hell sucks if you're taking the bus." Ray Olson

For people who like their humor very smart, I find it hard to think of much else that's anywhere near this funny.

Most people today have become too sensitive for the humorists and satirists of today's literature. From pop culture to current events, these shenanigans and goings-on demand reflection and exegesis without the typical descent into banalities and platitudes. From the ashes of so-called modern journalism and op-ed pieces comes Mr. Henderson - a beacon in the abyss.

Mr. Henderson effectively combines minimalism and biting commentary on everything from relationships to smoking into this collection of comic strips. He utilizes talking head-like characters to magical talking animals (and spoons) to serve up doses of humor that will make you laugh out loud and wonder why more people have not heard of the strip or the website that spawned it. Sometimes controversial and never dull, "That Darn Chauncey" is now a staple of my life and I'm happy to share this book with anyone I know to have a real sense of humor (and not just say they do).

Everything Is Swell is a collection of over 250 of That Darn Chauncey cartoons, which first appeared on the Stupid Children website (stupidchildren.com). It's quirky, off-beat humor that's intelligent and sometimes plays on current events. It's one of the few comic strips I read that causes me to giggle like a little girl.

The comic strip centers around Chauncey, the Typical Male, and features several unique and entertaining characters including the wise and noble Chinese Pig, a toaster possessed by Satan, and Chauncey's young niece Cupcake who's far smarter than her uncle.

Recommended for: adults who are anti-PC (political correctness, not personal computers) and looking for a good laugh.

(from the book)

"Dwayne and Laquisha live in low income housing near a 70-year-old wall. If rain falls at a rate of two inches per hour, and the wall is 15 feet high, how long will it take FEMA to intentionally blow the levee and redevelop the land into high priced condominiums ?"

"That wasn't one of the questions, Cupcake."

"Why not ? What are you hiding ?"

One of the funniest & wittiest comic cartoons I have read in a very long time. The simplicity of the caricatures reminds one of the crude renditions used to animate 'South Park', yet 'That Darn Chauncey' is far from the toilet humor used on that show. Chauncey seems to constantly be in a dark place in life, while all those around him, Shelia his ex-girlfriend, Cupcake her smart alec niece, Chinese Pig with the perils of wisdom, as well as others make Chauncey explain his points of views in the most twisted of ways. The website alone is worth a look see, although the book is what truly defines the site and would be a great gift to someone with that sick sense of thinking. It totally rocks!!!

This book reminds me of things I secretly wish I could do in real life. If you ever get stranded on a desert island and can only take one book with you...it should probably be about survival, or how to build a raft, or something like that. But if you can bring two books, then take this one, too. For people who like their humor very smart, I find it hard to think of much else that's anywhere near this funny.

I love the messed-up characters, and the humor in this book. It's funny, twisted, and filled with obscene jokes and social commentary. If everyone tells you that you have a "weird" sense of humor, the you should definitely check this out. Pure genius.
