A wonderful surprise.,
This review is from: Everything I've Got in My Pocket (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful album! Why didn't we hear about this CD when it came out? It's chock-full of lovely songs, and Ms. Driver's voice and singing style are just beautiful. This CD reminds me of Sarah McLachlan's album, "Surfacing," and is equally as good. The songs "Invisible Girl," and "Down," are particularly memorable, as is her cover of Bruce Springsteen's, "Hungry Heart."
I enjoy her acting, very much, but, I hope Ms. Driver will also continue to pursue the musical side of her career, as well. EVERYONE should hear this!

I bought this CD on a whim and I could not have been happier with the result. I listen to it on a daily basis almost and even my 13 year old requests it, so is must not be untolerable. I hope Ms.Driver will be able to grace us with another release in the future.

I've lived with a pre-release version of this album for about a month now. When I first got it, my thoughts ran to people like David McCallum and Bruce Willis. You know, BIG TIME MOVIE STARS that got to put out albums for no other reason than they were BIG TIME MOVIE STARS. Those albums usually demand a spin on the basis of morbid curiosity, but nothing more.
So let's state this up front: This is not that type of album. If you didn't know the name on the cover, you wouldn't wonder twice why/how this woman got a record contract. She sings fine, the arrangements are professional, the band is good. Driver was considering a singing career before her acting one took off, and you can believe that on the basis of this album. That said, this album is not without problems. The big one is that many of the songs here, while pleasant, are no more than pleasant. They come, they go, you wonder what you just heard. Many of these songs simply lack any sense of dynamics. The lyrics are competent, the vocals are competent, the music is competent. But there's no hook, no buildup, no payoff; the kind of song you might listen to again because sylistically you find it appealing, but which simply refuses to yield any nourishment. Whoever sequenced this album clearly understood that, because the best songs are mostly gathered at the beginning of the album. The first three songs, with the fourth a worthy contender, do have their charms. But then things go south quickly. The nadir of the album has surely got to be her version of Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart." Going in, I felt this a peculiar choice for a cover. Hit status not withstanding, it is surely one of Springsteen's weaker tunes and the simplistic, repetitive melody doesn't really cry out for a stripped down folky interpretation. But that's what you get here. And the result, expectedly, is simplistic, repetitive and dull. Whether this will be enough of a hit to allow Driver to record another album is unclear. The high time for this type of album, which would easily fit center stage in an environment such as the currently mothballed Lillith Fair, seems to have passed, at least commercially speaking. Nonetheless, Driver's celebrity might spark enough interest to provide the sales required for a second shot. And this one is suggestive enough of a talent below that if that happens, it will be worth checking out.

After hearing Minnie's song on the Phantom of the Opera movie soundtrack, I decided to check iTunes to see if they had her album. I listened to the clips and loved it. I was finally able to locate the CD yesterday and I haven't stopped listening to it. She has a great voice. Don't listen to this if you just want another pop album. The songs are soulful and mellow, and all in a good way.
I hope other people will give it a chance. Don't judge her because she's an actress. Listen to the music, you won't regret it. I just hope she records another CD.

Love, Love, Love this Album,
This review is from: Everything I've Got in My Pocket (Audio CD)
I've read the other reviews and I don't know if they either believe that you have to be extra hard on movie stars that make it in music or they are reviewing someone else. But if I'd never heard of her before and hearing the music, you feel you are meeting her for the first time, this is wonderful.
Everything I've got in your pocket, is so beautiful and original. The message is clear, this is a must have, when you want to be transported away and just crawl into the music. Good One !

I'll join the chorus of reviewers who were wary of this album, based on past experiences. Despite the press releases that Minnie Driver's album would break the mould. I was pretty apathetic to it, until I heard the song samples.
This album is truly amazing. Her voice is absolutely beautiful, soft and yet focused. The arrangements that accompany her music are beautifuly wrought as well. There's a lush, breezy atmosphere to the whole affair that makes the sun-drenched cover very appropriate. This is an autumn record for sure. It's setting suns and leaves burning and cool, crisp breezes working its way through the trees. This album reminds me a bit of Miranda Lee Richard's excellent The Herethereafter. As with that album, there is a bit of timeless quality to the album. The production is top-notch and very modern, yet its not overproduced. It compliments the songs, rather then trying to dazzle you with its brilliance, which is a nice feeling. This sounds like the sort of album I'd expect to find on an independent label or on a self-released album. The album highlights do mostly come at the beginning of the album. Everything In My Pocket is the best and strongest song on the album. It's a beautifully written and performed song. However, the rest of the album does not dissapoint. Invisible Girl could be a strong single, and there isn't a track on the album that I'd think of as filler. Her cover of Hungry Heart is superb as well, as she goes a long way in making the song her own. If you like artists like Miranda Lee Richards, Natalie Merchant, Aimee Mann or the like I'd definitely reccomend this.

Minnie Driver bats one out of the park with her debut cd. Driver's voice is smooth, sexy, and mellow and the songs are perfectly chosen and well arranged with a blend of pop, jazz, and even throwing in some steel guitar. If you enjoy Norah Jones, you'll love this cd, which only improves with repeated listening. I've been a Minnie Driver fan for years so I'm delighted to discover she's also a major voice talent.

I never knew just how talented Minnie Driver was until I saw her perform one of the songs from this album on Ellen. I rushed to the store to buy her album. It did not let me down. Absolutely every single song is great. She not only wrote the lyrics but also the music!

Wow! I did not expect much from this album but that just goes to show you should not judge a CD by its cover (or in in this case by its actress/songstress). Minnie Driver has a hauntingly beautiful voice that is reminiscent of Sarah McLachan. I love every song on this album including Ms. Driver's remake of "Hungry Heart." The song that drew me in however is number 6's "Deeper Water." I was sunk with the first note. *smile*
I truly hope Ms. Driver will follow this album with another. It will be a great loss to us if she does not. |
