We parents are our kids' first teachers, but we don't always know the best way to interact with them so they're learning something but it doesn't feel to them like they're at school. Amanda Morin has three kids of her own and has taught many more, so she knows how to reach kids and make it fun. This book has nearly 150 ideas you can do with your schoolage kids without a lot of supplies or preparation that will teach them about everything from sight words to earth science, math to magnetism. It's perfect for summer break or any time you might be in danger of hearing those dreaded words, "I'm bored."

This book is intended for kids aged 5 to 12, but I couldn't resist getting it and trying some of the activities with my 2-year-old niece and 4-year-old nephew. We had a lot of fun "Sounding off to the beat" with A-words, B-words, W-words, etc. They also enjoyed "Comic Strip Sequencing" with old Calvin and Hobbes comics, although their ideas about the proper sequence did not always match the original! Their narrations of Calvin's adventures were very creative and amusing. The Balloon Terrarium, however, turned into a messy disaster - much to the kids' delight.

My little guinea pigs are not yet old enough to work on multiplication and creative writing, but when they get to that stage, this wonderful book will be waiting for them! I recommend it heartily, even if your kids are currently preschoolers. It makes learning fun for children, but also for the supervising adult. In our case, the kids will never be bored at their aunt's house again... and they may go home just a tiny bit smarter, too.
