Heavy on anecdotes, light on content,

I purchased Tim Knox's book during the height of the media blitz surrounding its release. I guess I got caught up in the hype, even though I already receive Tim's email newsletter and am aware of the lack of substance in that.
The book is an easy read. It is full of humorous anecdotes and down-home wisdom. However, it is rather lacking in actual substance. Each chapter (usually 2-5 pages in length) is devoted to making a single, one-line point. Those points are usually nothing earth-shaking, but rather common-sense. At the cost, I do not feel cheated or ripped off by this book. For $15 it was good for some laughs, but if you are looking for something with content that will truly help you as you prepare to create your own business, you may wish to look elsewhere.

I bought this book sight unseen from an email from the marketers like a lot of others did. It's pretty basic stuff. I do wish there was more actual wisdom from Tim's mama, who somehow seems missing except from the title.
The chapters to me seem like he just pasted 20 unrelated columns together and made it into a book.

This was recommended by several newsletters I receive. It was funny but I was hoping for something more. Something seemed to be missing.

A Few Gems plus a Few Turn Offs,
This review is from: Everything I Know About Business I Learned from my Mama: A Down-Home Approach to Business and Personal Success (Hardcover)
Tim Knox is a comedian, and he relishes his southern roots. He prides himself on his tell-it-like-it-is attitude. He also has achieved monumental success through his hard work and savvy decisions. This means that this book does have many wise tips - and a wise-guy attitude.
The book starts on a not-great note. You have to go through a long, almost diary-like section. You're told that anybody who doesn't love this book must enjoy "wallowing in their own depression". The book plays up the fun of saying nasty things about people who are overweight or not beautiful. Plow past that and you do get some helpful advice. Failing is fine as long as you learn from it. Everyone fails a few times before finding their groove. Network at every possible opportunity you can. You never know which chance meeting will lead to a great result. Tim doesn't pull any punches. If people are choosing not to buy your product, then you didn't make a great product at a great price. The responsibility falls on your shoulders. You have to do what you love, and love what you do. He explains that about half of all businesses fail in the first four years - and that the majority fail due to bad management, bad financial planning and bad marketing. Proper preparation can really help to ensure long term success. Tim's book isn't just for young men. He explains that 55% of new startups are now created by women, and that there are over 10 million women-owned businesses in the US alone, creating $2.32 trillion in sales annually. Also, the most dramatic increase in new businesses is with those over the age of 65, as retirees finally have their chance to do what they've always wanted. So while I really enjoyed some of the knowledge presented, I definitely was turned off by some of the language used. I'm all for speaking straight, ignoring fluff and recognizing our own responsibility for what we do. I don't agree that it should involve ragging on other people to put them down for things that are completely outside their control, like their race or facial structure. Yes, you can make the generous assumption that anything that bothers you here must have been meant tongue-in-cheek. But really, a book should be able to help you improve your business and odds in life without having to disparage others along the way.

Tim is a guy for whom his word is bond, he means what he says, and he believes in the power of little people. Are those quaint out-of-date ideas? No ... They are the future.

I love Tim Knox. He makes his information extremely easy to read and understand using humor and real life situations. I have never had so much fun reading about business stuff. He takes a down home approach in this book and makes it funny and enlightening. Would recommend to anyone interested in life lessons and business.

funny but nothing new,
This review is from: Everything I Know About Business I Learned from my Mama: A Down-Home Approach to Business and Personal Success (Hardcover)
Indeed its a funny book, but the contents doesn't cover the resume you will found on amazon.com or on the book itself. It is very superficial, with a very long introduction why you should read the book. In mine opinion don't read it, its a waste of time. There are better books for learning how to do you business.

Boy Did I Get Taken,
This review is from: Everything I Know About Business I Learned from my Mama: A Down-Home Approach to Business and Personal Success (Hardcover)
I purchased Tim Knox's book, I guess expecting too much. I was looking for a funny take on starting a business, which is how the book is pitched and what some of the other Amazon reviewers say here, and what I got was an unintelligent good ol' boy approach, filled with dime-store advice, from a guy who clearly thinks he's funnier than he is.What it comes down to is there's not much insight here, nor in my opinion, comedy. And that Tim Knox has been building his business and reputation on ripping the rest of us off. I read some of the other more negative reviews on here that said it was good for a couple of laughs, but even that's kind. My guess is most of the positive Amazon reviews were written by Knox's friends, looking to help him boost sales. I also should've known better than to trust a book that didn't have comments from reputable reviewers on the jacket, but rather from other authors, who are probably also Knox's friends. Amateurish, full of "common sense advice" (a sense so common, mind you, that you don't need to purchase this book to have it), disorganized, with many sad and somewhat mean-spirited attempts at humor. The mama in the title eludes to the common sense approach of the book, but "mama" doesn't appear again--disappointing, as she might've actually had some more to offer, and been funnier. The truth: My seven-year-old daughter gives better advice. And makes me laugh harder. This is what I walked away with: More sound advice can easily be found on the Internet for free. There, I just saved you $23. If you insist on getting it, spend a penny for the used copy. Though trust me, it's not even worth that. Sadly, even the "Dummies" books are funnier than this one.

Falls Flat and Never Recovers,
This review is from: Everything I Know About Business I Learned from my Mama: A Down-Home Approach to Business and Personal Success (Hardcover)
Everyone's trying to make a buck these days, passing themselves off as some sort of business expert. Tim Knox has been cashing in on this "business" as well. While Knox attempts to fuse humor with business acumen, the end result is flatter than a pancake. If you're looking for any substantive expertise or knowledge (or real humor for that matter), look elsewhere. You can get more wit and wisdom from Larry the Cable Guy. A major dud...don't waste your money. Or your time. |
