5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable information!
While I agree with several of the other reviewers that say that Chris Aceto needs a better English editor (he seems to have the common problem with homonyms that many people do, your vs you're), the content of the book far outweighs any annoying English errors.

I read this book at the request of one of my personal training clients. Overall, it was okay. Mr. Aceto did a good job at communicating some complex physiology in an accesible manner. He also debunked several diet myths and took a stand against the use of fad diets.

Other reviewers have noted the poor editing, so I don't need to comment on that. I must...

While I agree with several of the other reviewers that say that Chris Aceto needs a better English editor (he seems to have the common problem with homonyms that many people do, your vs you're), the content of the book far outweighs any annoying English errors.

This book is not for the person who yoyo diets. This book is not for a person who eats up every weight-loss trend out there. This book contains very valuable and scientific information as to the hormonal background behind people who eat "healthy" but still have problems losing weight.

If you've read South Beach, The Zone, Atkins, Look Great Naked, and basically "eat clean", but still have problems this book might have some answers for you. I would reccommend this book, as well as Body for Life/Eating for Life.

Now here's a gem, a never cease to amaze you little fountain of knowledge you HAVE TO HAVE. Why? This author spells it all out...how calories are not always calories, how different types of carbs can make you fat, how lo carb diets work and how high carb diets work. WHich one is best? Depends on you! The author covers weight training. Specifically why it is BETTER than aerobics for melting away the pounds and supplements that can help you shed fat. Most important, the author is not PUSHING anything- a diet- a supplement, nothing is being hawked or shoved down the readers throat! That , I appreciate. No bars, drinks, meal replacement drinks or stupid diet pills. All you get is real world dieting info, how it works and how to use it. I can't say enough about this book. Its one heck of a read.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fitness professional's review, December 30, 2005
This review is from: Everything You Need To Know About Fat Loss (Paperback)
I read this book at the request of one of my personal training clients. Overall, it was okay. Mr. Aceto did a good job at communicating some complex physiology in an accesible manner. He also debunked several diet myths and took a stand against the use of fad diets.

Other reviewers have noted the poor editing, so I don't need to comment on that. I must say that I found the lack of proper source notation to be a problem. Unless Mr. Aceto was born with the understanding of exercise physiology, he needs to clearly cite the sources of his information following its presentation. This is standard procedure for all professional writers, particularly in science-based fields. Without a proper citation, it is not clear whether his information is fact, anecdotal evidence, or merely opinion.

My biggest concern with this book was the idea that cardiovascular exercise is not important for long-term health and weight management. Mr. Aceto bases this idea on the fact that the body adapts to aerobic exercise over time and thus requires less energy to perform the same work. Yes, this is true. Usually this is called improving one's cardiovascular fitness and is seen as a benefit of regular exercise. Eventually the body will adapt and become more efficient in performing any physical activity, including weight training. The argument against doing cardio could just as easily apply to weight training. Without a progressive increase in overload, the body will adapt to weight training and progress will stop. So, a well-designed exercise program takes this adaptation into account and incorporates regular changes to avoid plateaus. This applies to both weight training and cardio. While Mr. Aceto's claims about physical adaptation are true, they are somewhat misleading in the context of promoting weight training over aerobic exercise.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best book I have read on the topic., November 17, 1999
By A Customer
I picked this one up with a few others on weight training. I was also so very suprised and impressed with the book from its content, its arrangement and the author's really clear comprehension of the topic; and his ability to break the technical information into easy to absorb bite size information that I could apply. I have since bought 24 copy's for friends, relatives and especially for my girlfriends who spend endless (and now I know useless) hour upon agrivating hour on the stair master. The topic on aerobics is absolutely an eye opener! Highly, highly recommend this book to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars easy read, September 1, 1999
By A Customer
Ok, this book has its plusses and minusses. The plusses:great info, preseted in a easy to read and comprehensive fashion. It covers quite a bit in regards to the effect of insulin and simple sugars on body fat. The author also does a nice job explaining how exactly to follow a low carb diet as well as how to follow a high carb, very low fat diet. The minus: He's a little hedgy here in that he never really gives his opinions regarding what fat loss plan is best or ideal. He leaves that up to the reader to make his own decision. While I can appreciate he may have wanted to cover several topics and to leave the choice open to the reader, I think, with his knowledge in the field, he has done the reader an injustice by not being exactly clear which diet is best.Overall, enjoyed the book, was pleased and impressed and am putting a "strong buy" recommendation on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book. The title says it all., March 29, 2002
This review is from: Everything You Need To Know About Fat Loss (Paperback)
First I would like to thank Aceto for writing this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I have been looking for such a book which deals specifically with fat loss. The book is very informative on the subject, easy to understand, and complete. I noticed he would repeat certain key concepts throughout the book similar to how a good teacher teaches his students so the info is fully absorbed by the brain. I even found the basic structure of the book very good, going from very general to very specific and in an extremely logical order. I've read some of the reviews here which states that they were disappointed that Aceto did not pick a specific diet but spoke about many different diets. I feel this is misleading to the potential buyers of this book. Aceto gives the reader all the answers he/she needs in order to create a diet that is suitable for one's self. Not everyone is at the same point in the "weight loss" challenge. Some are "obese", others might be trying to lose that last 10 pounds (love handles), some might be in that "plateau" stage. Aceto gives various options so everyone will benefit from reading this book. I wish I had found it 5 months ago when I started my "weight loss" program. Needless to say, after reading this book, I have changed my diet and have already made great progress in just 2 weeks. And it shouldn't be called a "weight loss" program but a "fat loss" program. "Weight" should not be your focus, losing your body fat is the key and this book will help you acheive that goal.

Here are the things that I really got cleared up from reading this book. Calories do count, but it is the types, timing of food intaake and kid of exercise you do that , when combined, will unlock your potential for unlimited progress. The clarity and insightfulness the author approaches the subject with makes the technical and advanced information supisingly easy to assimilate digest and apply. Great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, June 5, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Everything You Need To Know About Fat Loss (Paperback)
I am so glad I bought this book. I feel that after having read it, I have the information and strategies that will allow me to lose fat the right way. I had already started weight training; this book reinforced how great that is for your body and explained that your diet is the other part of the equation that is really important. I have been eating low fat (no red meat, no fried foods, no full fat dairy products etc etc) for years, but this did not keep me from gaining weight. I was so depressed about this, but now I understand what I need to do to unlock fat burning. I wish I had read this book a long time ago!
