5.0 out of 5 stars Even a parent of one would love this book
This book talked to you like a friend -- who just happens to be an MD and a mother herself. She answers all your questions in a comfortable, easy to read way. Even if you are not having a twin, but are becoming a parent for the first, second, or third time this is a book to turn to.

I bought several books on twins. This one was not worth the extra money, as I could have EASILY gotten the exact same information from two other books that covered ALL the topics included in this book, but which were written in a more accessible and positive way. The first was: When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads, Revised Edition by Barbara Luke When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads, Revised Edition: Proven Guidelines for a Healthy Multiple Pregnancy and Twinspiration: Real-Life Advice From Pregnancy Through the First Year by Cheryl Lage. Twinspiration: Real-Life Advice From Pregnancy Through the First Year (for Parents of Twins and Multiples). I would also recommend "What to expect when you're expecting" What to Expect When You're Expecting: 4th Edition. That book has a great readability and pretty comprehensive information overall about pregnancy in general.

I would say between these four books, the book by Dr. Leiter (everything you need to know to have a healthy...) is beyond redundant information. The thing I disliked most about Dr. Leiter's book was that it was so sterile and medically based that it came off very negative. All the books had the same information about possible complications and so on, but her presentation made it seem like pregnancy was going to be all gloom and doom with nothing but hurdles to jump and that hoping to have a normal healthy pregnancy was really unrealistic.

It also lacked practical advice and real world advice. Every time a little case story was offered about a woman's pregnancy it was negative and showcased how worried the mother was or how something she did lead to complications. This is important information, but it isn't offered in a way that allows for the reader to feel like the problem is actually rare or avoidable. I feel that I spent a bit of time reading this book and felt more worried about my pregnancy afterwards than before, even though I don't have any complications and my babies are doing really well. I guess my point is, I can worry plenty on my own, and I'd rather stick to books that offer the same information about problems in risks in a way that is more neutral.

You can get every bit of information in this book in the other books. If you are looking for a medically based book for information, "When you're expecting twins..." By Dr. Luke above is a friendlier read and has the SAME information offered with alternatives, not just doom. It also offers lots more information specific to Multiple pregnancies, lots of nutrition advice, and was written with both positive stories from patients as well as potholes some women in her practice faced. But after the negative, Dr. Luke would go into how realistic that problem might be for the reader and how it might be avoided. It was far more balanced and positive to read.

I also thought that "Twinspirations" written by a mom, was a fun book to read and had LOTS of practical advice as well as family situations, things her husband thought about, things I would have never thought of myself, and I actually laughed several times with the author at things she wrote about. This was a very positive and helpful book. This was the book I asked my husband to read, because it was most readable and practical and fun. It also brought up a lot of family issues, like finances, handling the household work, child care, and practical life/household situations that a medical style informational book doesn't usually even touch upon.

Really, there's nothing really that bad about "Everything you need to know..." but there are just other books that do the same thing FAR better. I know I planned on buying several books and I could have left this one out.

This book is phenomenal! The author is an ob/gyn and a mother of twins herself! There's not a single question a woman pregnant with twins could have that isn't answered by this great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just Okay, July 19, 2005
This review is from: Everything You Need to Know to Have a Healthy Twin Pregnancy (Paperback)
I expected more from this book. I didn't really learn anything new from it. Most of us know that a twin pregnancy is higher risk than a singleton pregnancy. I wish it had gone over specifically how much weight you should gain in the first trimester, what to do for back-pain that inevitably will come later on, some advice for preparing for childbirth, etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars fantastic book, May 18, 2003

This review is from: Everything You Need to Know to Have a Healthy Twin Pregnancy (Paperback)
I have read this book, and felt it was a very informative book telling you all 'as it is'! It went through many different issues of things that can go wrong, which is very important, so that if something does go wrong, you can be aware of it, and speak to your doctor about it, before its too late!! It also went through the foods and vitamins that is necessary to eat as a pregnant mom of multiples. It divided the book with trimesters, which made it very easy to look up anything, you have a question about during the pregancy. It made me very comfortable knowing that a doctor herself wrote the book, (and someone who had twins herself- so she 'really' knew all the ins and outs) and that it was not just written by some journalist or someone. It was easy reading and very educational. I felt it was very similar to another book I've read called "Twins, Expert Advice from two Practicing Physicians on Pregnancy and the First Year", by Connie Agnew. The reason it got 4 stars instead of 5 was because certain times, I felt that the author jumbled around and wrote things in 2-3 different places, where I would have preferred to read about that specific thing, all in one place, but otherwise, its a great book for anyone expecting multiples to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary resource!!!, January 21, 2003

This review is from: Everything You Need to Know to Have a Healthy Twin Pregnancy (Paperback)
After the initial shock that we would have not one, but two babies, this book became my best friend. It gave me tons of practical information on types of twinning and what to expect during my pregnancy. In fact, my doctor was even impressed at the specific questions I was able to ask based on the knowledge from this book.
I would highly recommend the book to anyone expecting two or more. It's easy to read and is loaded with useful information.

5.0 out of 5 stars The bible for mothers expecting twins., March 29, 2002

When we learned we were expecting twin we received no less than 10 books all of which were tossed aside in favor of this fantastic resource. The information is comprehensive and well organized and guided us through a wonderful twin pregnancy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, but There is a Better One, February 11, 2007
This review is from: Everything You Need to Know to Have a Healthy Twin Pregnancy (Paperback)
This is one of 5 Twin Pregnancy Books that I read while pregnant with my now 7 month old twin sons. I found some useful information in it, but found "When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads" by Dr. Barbara Luke and Tamara Eberlein to be much more informative and helpful. The book I just mentioned is written by a doctor who runs a multiples clinic and a nutritionist that had twins and they know what they are talking about. This book is helpful, but that one was so much more helpful to me. I followed their advice for weight gain, etc. (even though my doctor said that 70 lbs was too much to gain) and had two very healthy boys at 36 weeks that never saw a second in the NICU and weighed in at 5lb 2oz and a whopping 6lb 2oz! Now, you would never know I had twins and gained that much weight. Good book but the other is better:)

I found this book to be very informative, however, at one point my husband told me to stop reading it because it was making me upset. It really put alot of fear into me and I found myself constatly worring about all of the things that could happen. It would have been nice if it wasnt so over medicalized. She would use alot of "doctor talk" and I wished she would have written on a more personal level, since she is a mother of twins and has expierenced this all herself. It did give alot of useful information and I dont regret buying it

The title of this book is very misleading. Instead of telling readers how to have a healthy pregnancy, the author lists major complications one after another. There were way too many statistics and percentages and I felt like I was reading the same information over and over. This book was very scary to read and offered no reassurance that a multiple pregnancy would end happily. I would definitely not recommend this book to any pregnant women.
