Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up-- Despite the inclusiveness suggested by the first title, the book deals mostly with the feelings of children of alcoholic parents, giving only an introduction to the complexities of alcoholism as a disease. Its readable layout and many color and black-and-white photos make it suitable for browsing, although the style is a little choppy because of the many short sentences. Since 20 million children in the U. S. have at least one alcoholic parent, this clear and serious look at coping when you can't move out is much needed. Specific advice on not being an enabler, as well as straight dos and don'ts should provide reassurance to readers new to the subject. The subject of rape is far more complex than is dealt with in . . . Date Rape . The fictionalized examples are good, but the repetitious and somewhat patronizing analysis of them double the amount of text needed for the limited content. Parrot's Coping with Date Rape and Acquaintance Rape (Rosen, 1988) or Benedict's Safe, Strong and Streetwise: The Teenager's Guide to Preventing Sexual Assault (Little, 1987) are much better choices. --Anne Osborn, Youth Training School, Dept. of Youth Authority, Ontario, CA
