The perfect guide for teachers of all grade levels.

While many companies provide on-the-job training programs for new recruits, teachers are given a classroom full of students and a directive: "Educate the next generation of Americans." With this daunting task before them, teachers today are confronted with overcrowded classrooms, budget cuts, and a faltering education system.

The Everything New Teacher Book recognizes that during the first couple of years in the classroom, teachers need effective suggestions on how to have a positive and lasting impact on their students. From the rules and tools of a successful learning environment to advice on behavior management, The Everything New Teacher Book is the perfect guide for teachers during their first or second year - and veteran teachers making a grade change.

Written by longtime teacher Melissa Kelly, The Everything New Teacher Book show teachers how to:

  • Set goals
  • Discipline students
  • Address prejudice, controversy, and school violence
  • Create valid assessments
  • Maximize lesson time
  • Manage their time and their health

This book appears to be useful only for secondary teachers. That was not stated in any of the information about the book and I would not have purchased it had I known. The author should have thought of that in the title, since its not what every teacher needs to know, but only secondary teachers. Its was not useful at all for people at the elementary level.

Every new teacher or returning teacher needs this survival guide. The book walks the inexperienced teacher through the jungle of the staff room, the copy machine and the setting up of their very first day. I purchased this book for my young sister-in-law as a a graduation gift and for my student teacher as a congratulations on your new job gift. Excellent gift idea for teacher unions for 1st year teachers in their disctrict.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for Secondary Teacher - not so much for Elementary level, April 7, 2007

This review is from: The Everything New Teacher Book: Increase Your Confidence, Connect With Your Students, and Deal With the Unexpected (Everything (School & Careers)) (Paperback)
I am thinking about going into the teaching field at the elementary level so for that aspect, this book doesn't really help. However it does help overall with the fear of becoming a teacher because I think every teacher has the same fears. The classroom, the students staring at them, the administration, etc. She does give some tips that would work with both elementary and secondary but these are very few. It really is for the secondary level. There was nothing in the title to suggest that the book was exclusive to the secondary level. I probably will keep this book mainly for a reference if I ever do decide to teach at the secondary level. For those of you only contemplating the elementary level, look elsewhere because you will be disappointed when all she talks about is writing out "referrals" for the disruptive teens.
