This book appears to be useful only for secondary teachers. That was not stated in any of the information about the book and I would not have purchased it had I known. The author should have thought of that in the title, since its not what every teacher needs to know, but only secondary teachers. Its was not useful at all for people at the elementary level.

Save My Sanity,
By April Ramsey Boyce (My own little world, BUHS) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Everything New Teacher Book: Increase Your Confidence, Connect With Your Students, and Deal With the Unexpected (Everything (School & Careers)) (Paperback)
Every new teacher or returning teacher needs this survival guide. The book walks the inexperienced teacher through the jungle of the staff room, the copy machine and the setting up of their very first day. I purchased this book for my young sister-in-law as a a graduation gift and for my student teacher as a congratulations on your new job gift. Excellent gift idea for teacher unions for 1st year teachers in their disctrict.

Great for Secondary Teacher - not so much for Elementary level,

This review is from: The Everything New Teacher Book: Increase Your Confidence, Connect With Your Students, and Deal With the Unexpected (Everything (School & Careers)) (Paperback)
I am thinking about going into the teaching field at the elementary level so for that aspect, this book doesn't really help. However it does help overall with the fear of becoming a teacher because I think every teacher has the same fears. The classroom, the students staring at them, the administration, etc. She does give some tips that would work with both elementary and secondary but these are very few. It really is for the secondary level. There was nothing in the title to suggest that the book was exclusive to the secondary level. I probably will keep this book mainly for a reference if I ever do decide to teach at the secondary level. For those of you only contemplating the elementary level, look elsewhere because you will be disappointed when all she talks about is writing out "referrals" for the disruptive teens.

This book reveals much more than what you learn in College,
This review is from: The Everything New Teacher Book: Increase Your Confidence, Connect With Your Students, and Deal With the Unexpected (Everything (School & Careers)) (Paperback)
I disagree with one of the reviewers of this book. The Everything New Teacher Book tells much more about 'the way it is'. It gives insight into what a new teacher will have to deal with politically and otherwise. It gives a view of education that doesn't always subscribe to what college of education professors think is true. I believe that it gives a much more realistic and even view of what teaching is all about.

Being a new teacher later in life really scared me to death, but this book helped to smooth the edges as I enter the classroom as a teacher for the first time. I am very happy that I ordered this book before I started to teach, it gave me some new ideas on connecting with the students and dealing with crises. I recommend it for all new teachers to read before standing up in front of that first classroom of students!

Geared for upper grades/ secondary. Not really meant for elementary teachers, due to content is going in the direction of older kids and how to deal with those types of situations. Just my opinion. Find it in the library and save the $$ for something different.

I am not a teacher; but I am a high school student who wants to be a teacher. This book has an amazing overview of the teaching profession. It covers teaching techniques, examples for each type of subject, tips, basics, organization, staff relations, potential reforms, etc.
it is a concisely amazing book. I highly recommend it.

This book was more of a general guide to teaching. It covers all areas in all grades. Good information, but pretty basic.
