A must for all parents of kids with diabetes,
By
This review is from: The Everything Parent's Guide To Children With Juvenile Diabetes: Reassuring Advice for Managing Symptoms and Raising a Happy, Healthy Child (Everything (Parenting)) (Paperback)
I received this book several days ago. I have already read it completely and think it is the most comprehensive book to date about raising a child with diabetes. The topics covered are helpful for the parent of a newly diagnosed child as well as seasoned parents of a child living with diabetes who are moving into a new realm of growing up with a chronic disease.
A must for all parents of kids with diabetes and a nice way to get your feet under you after dx. This book includes tools and information about technology to help manage the disease but also ways to get through emotional toll disease can take on the entire family. I'm glad to see a portion of proceeds goes to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, but noticed that the book mentions many resources for finding information, not just JDRF.

This is an excellent book for any parent who is faced with raising a child with diabetes. I purchased this book five years into my daughters diagnosis and learned many new things. This book is very well written for the layperson and easy to pick up for reference. I would strongly recommend it!

As a parent of a newly diagnosed child, I just bought this book and I am half way through reading it. It is so informative, so easy to read and seems to contain information on every aspect of dealing with type 1 diabetes. It gives references to other books and places. My husband, who hates to read, also is reading and indicated that it is a quick read with valuable information. The author comes through as so genuine and you truly feel like you are getting help from a friend. I highly recommend this book.

This brilliant well written book really is the everything guide for parents with children with diabetes. The book addresses many issues that will help all parents to raise a healthy well adjusted child with diabetes. The newly diagnosed section is a great resource for a parent that is a new caregiver. Recently I recommended the book to a mom of a newly diagnosed child. She felt that Ms. McCarthy was with her in the hospital during the diagnosis, and the tips she gave were right on!
The book also addresses topics for veteran caregivers, addressing such topics as diabetes and teens, teens and diabetes burnout. It also will help the experienced parent keep a fresh approach to diabetes management The tip sections throughout the book are very helpful and informative for all caregivers. This book should be on the bookself of every parent who cares for a child with diabetes.

As parents of a newly diagnosed child with Type I diabetes, we were looking for a recently written, comprehensive overview of what we and our child were facing, and this book does an excellent job of providing exactly that. Covering topics ranging from how to deal with stereotypes and "helpful" comments from others about how to treat diabetes to glucose monitors, insulin choices, and technology, to dealing with issues like school, camp, and playdates, it is a very useful guide. We have a few quibbles--although overall reassuring, for example, it talks about checking a child's blood sugar every night after the child goes to sleep when the parent goes to bed and an additional several times a week in the middle of the night, which is far more often than our diabetes team suggests is needed. Even so, for parents (and grandparents--we bought extra copies for them) looking for an introduction to the world of Type I diabetes care, this is an excellent choice.

This book is a must-have for any caregiver of a person with Type I (Juvenile) diabetes. It includes straight-forward, no-nonsense facts that are written in everyday terms. It is obvious that the author knows from reality what she is writing about, not just from a text book.
Probably the best compliment I can make is to say that I wish I had this book when my son was diagnosed!

This was an excellent book! I only wish I had bought it right after my son's diagnosis. I read it a year and half later and still felt it was very helpful. I encourage every parent struggling to learn what to do for their child with diabetes to read this!
