5.0 out of 5 stars Strength in many approaches
I found this book to be infinitely helpful in toilet training my daughter. Because the author presents four different methods of potty training, she isn't obligated to advocate her method and dismiss competing methods as "wrong". Acknowledging that there are many correct ways to toilet-train a child is something that few authors have the latitude or courage to admit...

1.0 out of 5 stars Focus on infant potty training
The author clearly believes you should train an infant and not use diapers. But then there isn't a clear plan for training a baby. This is kind of a mix of lots of ideas without a committment to one specific plan. Kind of confusing, not too helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strength in many approaches, April 24, 2005
This review is from: The Everything Potty Training Book: Professional, Reassuring Advice to Help You and Your Child Through This Challenging Time (Everything (Parenting)) (Paperback)
I found this book to be infinitely helpful in toilet training my daughter. Because the author presents four different methods of potty training, she isn't obligated to advocate her method and dismiss competing methods as "wrong". Acknowledging that there are many correct ways to toilet-train a child is something that few authors have the latitude or courage to admit. This book also presents practical, non-judgemental advice regarding which method may work best in different family situations. After reading about all the approaches, I was able to fashion an approach that was consistent with my parenting style and worked well with my daugher's personality.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a very good book about potty training, September 7, 2004

This review is from: The Everything Potty Training Book: Professional, Reassuring Advice to Help You and Your Child Through This Challenging Time (Everything (Parenting)) (Paperback)
At this time most magazines and books try to tell us (parents), that it is almost not possible to potty train child before age 3. This book shows that it is POSSIBLE and how to do it without a lot of pressure. Potty training is difficult because it takes a lot of time and patients but it is worth to do it as quick as possible.
Potty Training Book gives a lot of information about possibilities of potty training for babies, and toddlers of different ages. It describes 4 method of potty training:
Baby-Track Method : for babies to get used to potty as a every day ritual
Potty-Practice Method : for toddler under 2 years old
Fast-Track Toddler Method : toilet training in less then a day
Potties-Without -Pressure Method
Besides the book describes readiness skills, common problems and " potty" health
For me - it works it takes two mouth, but now my 19 month old daughter starts to use potty regular and she is really proud of herself every time. I hope in 5 month she will be completely trained.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good beginning Overview, November 15, 2005
This review is from: The Everything Potty Training Book: Professional, Reassuring Advice to Help You and Your Child Through This Challenging Time (Everything (Parenting)) (Paperback)
I think this was a good first book for parents about to tackle potty training. While as some have posted the author does clearly think infant training is best, other methods are also clearly presented and outlined. Use this book as a starting point. It outlines a few major methods. From this you should be able to decide which method you want to use and then focus your next book purchases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep an open mind when you read this book, March 31, 2005

Mark Brian, 39 and counting (Dallas, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Everything Potty Training Book: Professional, Reassuring Advice to Help You and Your Child Through This Challenging Time (Everything (Parenting)) (Paperback)
I had to make a comment about those reviewers that gave this book a low rating. Dr. Sonna's approach on potty training may seem different to many, but it is very, very effective. Her so called "bias" is to train kids in a different way than what we are accustomed here in the USA. If you are buying this book it's because you are needing help in this area. Maybe her advice is the advice you don't want to hear, because you've been approaching potty training with no results, and feel you couldn't possibly be doing it wrong. Some of the people who negativiley criticize this book because it's teaching a different approach to toilet train probably would criticize their doctor for perscribing a pill that cures an illness that is causing pain, when all they wanted is a pain killer. If you ever travel abroad you quickly learn that here in the US our kids are toilet trained much later than anywhere else in the world. Her pointers, suggestions, and even, thank God, her humor really help you deal with what is really not a fun and messy issue in child rearing. Throw out your (mis)-conceptions on potty training, open your mind to a different approach, buy this book, and follow the advice. The bottom line is: IT WORKS! And isn't the whole point in buying this book to find a method the works?

This book is awesome!

My daughter just turned 2 and I was hoping to get her started with potty training. While searching online I found way too many books specifying only one way to accomplish this. Since this is my first time being a potty coach, I had no idea what to do or where to begin, and especially which method to even concentrate on.

With everything from infant training to potty practice to readiness skills to basic tips, she covers it all!

For the negative reviews stating she clearly advocates infant training, I would have to disagree. I don't believe those reviewers read the rest of the book! I felt similarly while reading her topic on readiness skills, thinking she may prefer the wait until they're ready method! I believe with every method, she stands behind it, leaving you to be able to choose for yourself which would work best for you.

After much research now on infant/early start potty training - something I truly was not even aware was an option, it's something I wish I had started at least a year ago!!! It makes perfect sense and I have always wondered why you never saw toddlers from another country wearing diapers! American kids potty train waaaaay later than the rest of the world, and much later than even americans in the 50's, 60's, and 70's! It's not that I expect my daughter to be out of diapers and be able to get herself undressed, up on the potty, and cleaned up afterward by herself - that's unrealistic. What I hope for is that she'll be able to tell/signal to me when she has to go or at least she'll understand that sitting on the potty means she needs to do her business, and hopefully have 1 less diaper to change/throw! Not only that, but the sooner your child thinks of time sitting on the potty as a daily routine, the less likely you are to have refusals! It just makes sense.

As for me, we have chosen the "potty practice" method and it's working wonders for us!! We also let her have some naked time (in potty proofed areas!) so she can witness herself eliminating. She has peed in the potty once and gone poo several times in the potty, so far! We have read her zero books on using a potty, she does not talk very much, she's not asking to wear big girl undies, she doesn't undress herself - all those classic "readiness skills" she apparently lacks - and she is still having successes using the potty practice method. She's proud of herself, she pushes when on the potty (we taught her that), she enjoys waving bye to her pee/poop, has fun cleaning up and washing her hands, and she does signal to me when she needs to go poop - I just have to be paying attention!

This book is a cute little size, easy to read format, good humor, packed with information/tips, and a great price!

Along these lines, another book I have liked is, "Diaper Free Before 3" by Jill M. Lekovic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful, but NOT everything!, February 16, 2010

This review is from: The Everything Potty Training Book: Professional, Reassuring Advice to Help You and Your Child Through This Challenging Time (Everything (Parenting)) (Paperback)
This book was somewhat helpful in potty training our 3 year old son. It included all of the basic information and had some good suggestions for common potty training issues. However, it did not fully address the issue of resistance to potty training or what to do when a child has some success, but then reverts. It could be that our child was just a bit more difficult to potty train than average, but this book was not as helpful as we had hoped in addressing our specific issues.
