Everything You Want to Know About Magick (But Were Afraid To Ask) has a healthy balance of reason and creativity. Scanlon has presented well researched information on theory and step by step directions to preform rituals that takes the fear out of doing magick for a beginner.

This book is universal in nature, that the principles learned here can be applied to other traditions. The main sources used here are from The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Hermeticism and Qaballah to name a few. This is not a Wiccan or Pagan specific book which I think is a huge advantage because most books on Magick are aimed at wither Wiccans or Pagans with the focus on the God and Goddess (lord/lady) and other specific elements that are associated with these paths. Scanlon presents Magick as something for everyone regardless of your spirtual belief or lack of one. If you are looking to step up your magickal practice this book is a must read.

What I really enjoyed most about this book was it was packed full of really good information on the main subjects of the chapters while at the same time providing additional side information in the text or in the footnotes. Scanlon knows what he is talking about, I never doubt for a moment or questioned a think he said. All his knowledge is based on legitimate sources and traditions.

What will you learn from this book? There is a ton to learn from Scanlon. You learn about the Lesser Banishing Ritual of Pentagram which Scanlon calls "the Equilibrating Ritual of the Pentagram" for a good reason which Scanlon explains regarding the meaning of "banishing". Your learn about the Tree of Life from Kabbalah which Scanlon explains excellently.

I really am enjoying this book ! As a working Magician myself, I love the fact that the author is an actual practicing Occultist & not an armchair Theorist regurgitating what's already been written by other people. It's quite clear as the reader progresses though the book, that the author is skilled in their craft, which only comes from years of experiencing Magick in all it's myriads & forms ranging from various traditions & creeds.
I am especially fond of the ERP (Equilibrating Ritual of the Pentagram) and am working with it on a daily basis. This ritual brings to mind a quote from Chumbley "Banish not but all realign".
Mr. Scanlon's approach to The Tree of Life is clear & free of muddled or confusing jargon which is refreshing to anyone approaching the Qabala for the first time. He makes working The Tree far more accessible and user friendly especially when one is creating talismans for their spellwork.
Overall, this book is a pleasure to read as it's extremely informative , practical and repectful of Daemons (Divine Intelligence repleat with Wisdom) and Angels alike.
I have been recommending this book to my friends and aquantances who are beginning their journey on the path to self discovery and Magick.
Kudos to Shawn Martin Scanlon!

This book promises to distill the many diverse traditions of magick and present an accessible, usable and effective sytem. The author certainly has the credentials, having studied and used magick from his adolescence on. He addresses everything from Hermeticism to Zen to shamanism to lucid dreaming. The results are decidedly mixed.I found the book most successful when the author discussed his own experiences. Unfortuantely, there was too little of this. The main problem with "everything" books is that you get a lot of tidbits. As they say, a little learning is a dangerous thing. I was disappointed on the major role the Quabbalh and Tree of Life played in this book. If I wanted a book on Hebrew mysticism, I would have bought it. Unfortunately, most if not all his exercises after chapter three require mastery of it. So if like me you don't care to memorize the tree, its spheres and paths and the Hebrew alphabet, the rest of the book doesn't matter much. Overall , the book and the exercises are clearly written in a friendly tone. There is a fairly detailed appendix. However in the Kindle edition the alphabets, diagrams and sigils are difficult to see.

The author minimizes the dangers of dealing with daemons. HIs own experience with Izabael underscores that. He believes he created her when in fact it was another daemon. I was troubled by the experience where the author initiated and branded a woman he married after a week to this daemon. Eventually the daemon took over the woman's body and was out of his control. Similarly, sharing your energy with the daemon does not seem to be the brightest idea either.

This book was perhaps too ambitious in scope and as a result, fails as either a reference or a stand alone system. While fascinating in parts with some interesting exercises, it ultimately left me confused and frustrated.

I bought this book and have found it to be very effective. It is a different approach to hermetic magick but it is outlined in a very effective and useful approach to hermetic mysticsm. I have read many books on magick and this book is very efficient and it encourages combining other forms of magick with hermeticsm. Experimenting with magick is really the key to finding what is best for an individual. The experiences in the book can help guide a new magi into learning more and creating his/her own rituals. Its about making it work and creating the reality that you feel you deserve. I would highly recommend this book to anyone needing a concise approach to magick.
