Facing the Challenge

Driven, with a stubborn streak a mile long, Rena Peaks is sure she can take care of her fourteen-year-old brother, Brian, finish college, and launch her career. But her well-ordered plan doesn't factor in her brother's arrest for murder--or the compelling generosity of A.J. Martin, the handsome social worker assigned to Brian's case.

Despite her rising panic and an unforgiving judicial system, Rena is determined to prove she is a self-sufficient woman of color who can handle it all on her own. But when A.J. steps into her heart, Rena discovers that she doesn't have to sacrifice everything she needs to hold onto...

Amazon.com Review

Renea Peaks is a strong woman who knows what she wants. After losing both parents at a young age, she plans to guarantee her future success with a college degree and a promising first job. But when her older brother dies and leaves her with the care of her teenage brother Brian, Renea's plans start to falter. Just weeks later, Brian is arrested for murder in far-off Detroit, and it looks like Renea's future is all but certain.

Determined to prove herself, Renea arranges to move to Detroit, start an internship, and complete her degree from afar--all while helping her brother through this difficult time. Success isn't an "option" for her but a requirement to keep custody of Brian, and Renea must convince his sexy caseworker, A.J. Martin, that she can handle it all. Even though A.J. accepts Brian's case with hesitation, he can't help but be impressed with Renea's confidence and optimism. When she moves in to a dangerous neighborhood, A.J. hopes that will be Renea's only mistake.

Confidence can't make her stolen furniture return, however, and Renea has to rely on A.J. for advice--and a place to stay. As their intense attraction deepens into a passionate relationship, the two struggle to maintain some distance and protect their hearts. But when Renea continues to alienate Brian and confuse her priorities, A.J. can't bring himself to approve her guardianship. Can he admit such concerns without jeopardizing the relationship? Will Renea learn to overcome her own stubbornness and reach out to the people she needs most?

Angela Patrick Wynn takes readers through a thoughtful journey as a young woman learns the skills she really needs to succeed: patience, love, and selflessness. Wynn's voice is fresh and authentic, and readers will enjoy the careful development of her characters and situations. Everything She Wants has everything a good book requires; the inspiring story line is icing on the cake. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

Review

"Angela Patrick Wynn is an author to watch. I was immediately drawn to the characters and the situations in which they found themselves. Renee is a fully empowered heroine, one readers will love." -- Anita Bunkley, author of Steppin' Out With Attitude

"With great finesse and tenderness, Angela Patrick Wynn demonstrates just how difficult it can be to achieve everything one wants. Her novel convincingly explores how figuring out a way to balance love of family, love of self, and love for one special person can lead to that ultimate, yet sometimes elusive prize: happiness. Everything She Wants is a sweet and engaging read." -- Sharon Mitchell, author of Nothing But the Rent

5.0 out of 5 stars "A Feel Good After You Finish Reading It, novel.", November 24, 2001
This review is from: Everything She Wants (Mass Market Paperback)
Angela Patrick Wynn created a character in Renea Peaks that every woman can identify with, and every man wants to meet. Her energy, enthusiasm, and determination, though flawed by inexperience, is contagious. I found myself rooting for her to make the right decisions when faced with challenge after challenge. When she made the wrong decisions I could empathize with her for trying so hard. The steady, handsome, A.J. was there for her and Brian every step of the way, even though he had his own demons to deal with. It was as if I was allowed to travel her jouney without her knowing I was there. That is the type of author I love to read.
Other reviews have explained the storyline very well. I won't bother to go into it here. What I will say, is that when I finished reading it, I took it in both hands, held it to my heart, and sighed. Then, I raised it up to the heaven's and said: "YES!" You have to be there -- that means you have to read it for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Spellbinding! A Love Story Par Exellence!, October 30, 2001
This review is from: Everything She Wants (Mass Market Paperback)
Ms. Wynn's excellent debut novel shows us all the qualities we love in a main character. Renea Peaks does not let her youth intimidate her quest to get "Everything She Wants." While trying to finish college in California, Renea finds out her fourteen-year-old brother Brian has been arrested in Detroit for murder.

She decides to leave California to help her brother out. Her big move to Detroit means she must upset her well-ordered life and start all over again. When she arrives in Detroit, she does the impossible. She finds a way to finish college, build her career, and take care of her brother, thus proving to herself and her family that she can do it all.

In the process of accomplishing her almost impossible goal, she falls in love with A.J. (and so does the reader). Although A.J. is scarred by events in his past, he is the kind of man every woman dreams of, loving, kind, considerate, strong ...

Ms. Wynn's plot makes the reader laugh, cry, and at times even put on some slow music and dance. Her characters will capture your heart and you simply will not be able to put the book down until the last scene unfolds, making you a better person for having read this inspiring novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Rewarding Read!, August 20, 2001
By
This review is from: Everything She Wants (Mass Market Paperback)
Imagine a woman who struggles to have everything she wants: the support of family, a promising career and the love of a good man. Renea Peaks, the authors heroine, is a woman with fortitude and gumption who struggles with life changing obstacles while holding her own, determined to have "Everything She Wants". Ms. Wynn's debut effort is an exhilirating read that will vault you into Renea's world and hold you there until the novel's end.

Ms. Wynn's plot is intricately written and builds upon the importance of commitments to family and to self. You will feel every emotion for Renea, whose goals for her life alter from minute to minute: she's on the road to completing college in California when she must journey to Detroit to support her younger brother, Brian. Her experiences in Detroit will have you crying with her and cheering for her as she tries to make the right choices that will effect her future.

She is aided by A.J., a givng man whose charity and commitment are almost destroyed by earlier events. His confidence in himself and in his mentor are shaken temporarily, but you can't keep a good man down! While his guard is up when interacting with Renea initially, his heart slowly warms to Renea and what develops is a wonderful love story.

Ms. Wynn successfully tells a wonderful story about relationships and the importance of never giving up on your dreams despite all odds.
