From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-This self-help book examines the dynamics of drug and alcohol dependency from the point of view of the child of an addict. Seven chapters cover definitions, effects of substance abuse on the user and family, codependent behavior patterns, and ways to get help. Many effective photographs, in black and white and in full color, depict family situations. Fictionalized examples of children's reactions to the behavior of addicted parents are realistic and appropriately illustrative. This clear, concise work presents the brutal facts, yet the author manages to instill a sense of hope in readers. The nonjudgmental tone supports the parent's need for help and the child's lack of responsibility for the adult's disease. The basic message is that children of substance abusers deserve to have satisfying, drug-free lives. The fact that this is possible is illustrated with the example of President Clinton, who flourished despite the addictions of his stepfather and brother. An effective presentation that will inform and uplift.
