Book Description

January 1992 0201480301 978-0201480306
From the introduction we read: This beginning book on fractions is primarily intended for students in grades 4-6, but may be used wherever concrete models of fractions are needed top promote understanding and computational skill. No previous experience with Cuisenaire rods is assumed. Rod relationships and colors may be learned as students work on the meaning of fractions in the first few pages. Meaning of fractions is emphasized throughout by constant reference to rod models, Initial work with equivalent fractions, inequalities, addition of fractions, and subtraction of fractions is all done with reference to a rod model and with not attempt to develop abstract procedures. Only after much experience with concrete models is the abstract procedure introduced.... After considerable experience with reds, many students will be able to add and subtract fractions in their heads without pencil and paper. Most fractions in this book are proper fractions --only one page uses improper fractions. 50 page workbook, 48 pages of fraction problems with the answers in back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Painless fractions, March 16, 2002

Laura Brown McKenzie (On a mountain in AL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Everything's Coming Up Fractions: with Cuisenaire Rods (Paperback)
The first time I used this book was in a classroom of 6th - 8th grade students. Their math abilities ranged from 1st to 7th grade as did their reading abilities. Out of 15 students, one found the work difficult. For the rest, this book made learning fractions painless! Each child went at his/her own rate and one child managed to finish the book in two weeks (making me wish I had just as good materials in other topics!) I LOVE this book. After coming home to teach my own children, I made sure to add it to our home library AND to the library I manage for a group of homeschoolers. I can't imagine teaching fractions any other way.
You'll need a box of cuisenaire rods. You can use the c-rods to teach multiplication, division, subtraction, addition, area, perimeter, measurement, and even algebra so buying a box is well worth it.
Each step for learning fractions is broken down in manageable (and rememberable) segments. After each segment is a fun puzzle that the teacher can use to make sure the concept was understood (a test that doesn't look like a test.) The kids love the puzzles and love using the rods. Why use any other system?

5.0 out of 5 stars Combine with Connecting Cuisenaire Rods. Excellent applied math., September 30, 2010

This review is from: Everything's Coming Up Fractions: with Cuisenaire Rods (Paperback)
I teach my first, second, and third graders with Miquon because it is an applied math approach. During or at the end of third or fourth grade we use connecting cuisenaire rods to complete the book "Everything's Coming Up Fractions" . They especially enjoy using their answers to figure out the riddles.
