5.0 out of 5 stars Not everyone from Nashville May 20, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Greg is from about as far away from Nashville as you can be. Too bad they didn't listen to his stuff instead of judging him by where he's from. A first-rate singer/songwriter. From the strange song about a stalker in "Wouldn't that be Love" to a true country classic like "Bluebell" (Popular Demons) Greg can do it all.
The man and his band also put on one heck of a live show. If you get a chance to see him go well rested. He will wear you out!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely great !!! Love it. January 13, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
The songs on this CD are so well written - the lyrics are very real, witty & hip in a way that everybody can relate to. Trooper sings with an honesty of emotion that isn't often heard - nothing contrived or done simply for effect. Strong production and musical performances -including backup vocals by Roseanne Cash on "Blind Spot". Trooper consistantly puts out great records that soon become "favorites".

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing January 13, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
What with 'biologically blue' (damn i love that song), 'ireland' and 'steal away' and the rest of the songs on this album, it is by far a work of excellency. Guaranteed to get those feet tapping and put a smile on your face. Greg is an amazing artist, and even amazinger live!! I'm so glad i discovered his music - just feel sorry for those out there that haven't!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ghost of Tom Joad February 11, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Part Matthew Sweet, part Bap Kennedy, part Elliott Murphy, part Richard Shindell, part Ellis Paul...
...not sure I have run out of derivatives yet. But it all sounds so fresh and new and free of anybody else's cliches, and at the same time, bringing a zest that all these good-guy troubadors shined on a maiden spin.

This is an amazing discovery. The only question that keeps running through my brain is "Who is this guy? And how did I miss him in my eternal quest for a sweet new upbeat Dylan figure?" Not sure if all of these sunny little songs are going to last with me, but right now, they are irresistable, giving me some kind of happy zen in these terribly downbeat times.

"Steal Away" shimmers past anything on this effort with a force and tightness that calls to mind Lucinda Williams' "Right in Time." Again, not sure how long old Greggie here is going to hold out for me. But right now he sounds like a keeper. To quote Lester Bangs in his final line of a now legendary review of Springsteen's maiden outing, and with proper respects: He's not the new John Prine.

Greg Trooper and the Flatirons are a great band. I loved this album. My favorites are Ireland and Biologically Blue.
A refreshing departure from the usual commericial stuff.
