4.0 out of 5 stars Great for offline reading with Kindle Fire November 29, 2011
By Michael
Verified Purchase
I tried JustReader on the Kindle Fire because Google Reader app isn't available. I love it, especially the offline reading feature. I sync up before I leave the house and then I can read anywhere, which is great because the Kindle Fire doesn't have 3G. Only 4 stars because this version is missing some sharing features. Please update the Amazon Appstore version to the latest version that's available in the Android Market and also add the paid version.

This review has changed - worth reading!! I REALLY liked the earlier version. Then I saw the pop up ad that said if you liked it - then write a review in the marketplace here and you can get a free upgrade to the PRO! Great, I thought! So, since I liked that version, I wrote a good review based upon my experience with that version and contacted the developer like instructed. He asked a lot of questions, and suggested that I upgrade the the newly released free version. I did. It looked nice, but performed differently. The new upgrade started having problems. Lost tokens, freezes up a lot, heavy drain on time/resources. While this is running, everything else slows down to a crawl (or stops). Tried cleaning out things. No luck. Communicated issues/concerns to developer. Logs sent to development team. Developer asks me to put into debug mode and send info. Also, had to ask developer via email three times how to upgrade to PRO (hoping that pro version would not have same problems).

Finally got info from developer on how to upgrade to pro. He sends instructions/location on where to download .apk pack. Can access this site and get pack if on my personal computer. Cannot pull it/download it on Kindle Fire. Tried different browsers on Fire, tried different times of the day, etc. Contacted developer AGAIN. He sends apk file to email account. Apparently I'm supposed to get it from my personal computer to my Fire??!! (sideload it is the term I believe people use). That's a no go in my book if you are writing a program that is supposed to be easy to use on a portable device.

So, to sum it up - original version good. New version pretty, but more problems than it is worth for me. Have to ask developer to fulfill free PRO upgrade three times. Unable to do this automatically with Kindle Fire. This is a LOT more trouble than it is worth.

My final result - I will be unloading this and seeking a different RSS reader.

I originally started using this for my Kindle Fire as a replacement for the mobile version of google reader--which is usable, but not great. At the time of downloading, I tried every Google Reader app in the Amazon market, and even then this was the best. I titled my original review as "Will Hopefully Improve" because I thought that, in order to compete with the standard Android google reader app (even though I couldn't use it at the time on the Fire), this app needed an upgrade. I can honestly say now that this app has in fact improved, and even though I am running a custom Jelly Bean rom on my Fire, there are no other google reader apps (including googles!) that I would rather use than JustReader. This is the best Google Reader app I have found in either the Amazon App store, or Google Play.

The main reason is that this app is designed for one thing: reading. It's not about delivering your content in some flashy magazine-like fashion, or intruding on your social networks. It's about reading, and that makes it perfect.

The newest version includes several themes, more than just the standard "dark" and "light." My favorite is one called "lelyak," which is light text on a gray background, and it is easy to read in any setting. Font sizes and styles are customizable. In "tablet mode" (an option in the settings), when in landscape, JustReader loads all of the articles from the current feed on the left with blurb text, taking up about a quarter of the screen, and when you click one, it loads that article in the remaining space on the right. This lets you scroll through articles on the left, and load the ones you want to read on the right, without having to constantly go back to your feed list.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Work for apps/domain acvounts April 28, 2011
Verified Purchase
After an error when I selected my account, the first sync returned no items.

I used my domain name account, as that is the one I use with reader.

Uninstalled.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good app but eats a lot of battery. June 10, 2011
Used this app on a Motorolla DroidPro. This fills the need for a google reader syncing app with a widget-not so many around, apparently. The widget is resizable and scrollable on my ADW launcher.
Major criticism is that this app eats a lot of battery somehow. I had it set to 4 hour sync, no images downloading, and still it used 21% of battery power according to my battery monitor.
Really I would rate it 3.5 stars, but they don't let us do half stars.
The search for a scrollable RSS feed widget continues...

2.0 out of 5 stars JustReader: Memory exceptions make it useless April 17, 2012
Verified Purchase
When it works, its great. Push a button and it downloads articles for me to read offline, however memory exceeptions on my Kindle Fire make it useless.

User interface is superior to gReader. I can mark as read, mark as favorite with the swipe of a finger. I can zip through a list of 200 articles and mark the ones I want to read later. I can then read through the full articles using just one finger.

Too bad I have to give it up.

I expected some computer sounding form of a voice but was quite surprised at the voice generated by this app. I definitely recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother.
It was a good app before Google Reader shut down. Now it is useless. It relied completely on google reader for content.

1.0 out of 5 stars Meh, there are better
Feedly is a much better RSS app especially with Google reader being retired in the near future. Don't know if this will stick around after the gReader decommission.

JustReader Key not compatible with Kindle Fire?!?!
If you have another Android device, it does work to copy the key over and sideload it on the Fire. I suspect it is an oversight of some sort that the key hasn't been tagged as compatible.
