Shared decision making in health - from evidence to action,
By Ulrich Grueninger (Berne, Switzerland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Evidence-Based Patient Choice (Paperback)
"Evidence-Based Patient Choice", edited by Adrian Edwards and Glyn Elwyn, is a very helpful collection of thoroughly researched and written papers on almost every important aspect of how the current state of the art and science of fostering the cooperation of patients and health care professionals have developed. The title implies that the focus is on patients, but it should include health care professionals as well - since the book is about the cooperation of the two and their often very difficult task of choosing a way to proceed with diagnostic, therapeutic or preventive measures, often in the face of uncertain or incomplete information and under the pressure of illness or anxiety regarding their own health. It is not a cook book and reading demands a certain conscious effort, but it is always a pleasure to follow the well crafted (and equally well edited) prose. Even for the experienced practitioner or scholar the book provides many new facts and thoughts and - even more important - it provides a comprehensive overview interwoven every so often with refreshing new insights, thanks to the broad array of contributors from all important areas that have contributed - and continue to do so - to this important aspect of patient-health professional communication and interaction.
