5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Should Be Available in Your OR, May 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Evidence-Based Practice of Anesthesiology: Expert Consult - Online and Print, 2e (Paperback)
In the introduction, Michael Roizen states that in this book "Dr. Fleisher chose to present...the very questions I want answered; at least one of these question seems to nag at me every day." I absolutely agree. Roizen states further that the authors not only present the evidence for various anesthetic questions, but then they "state the actions they would take and explain why." This is an extremely relevant approach.

I first skimmed this book by reading the clearly highlighted "AUTHOR'S RECOMMENDATIONS" at the end of each of 73 chapters. That took several hours. For chapters that were particularly relevant to my practice, I then read and underlined those chapters - which took a lot longer.

Don't miss reading Chapter 1. It is a well-written history of the ASA's development of evidence-based practice parameters starting in 1991. It is impressive the way the ASA has built on a good start over the years, using a systematic evaluation of scientific evidence in addition to expert opinion. This book follows the ASA's methodology and is a great work manual for any anesthesiologist to use daily and have available in the operating room. With 10 major sections and 73 chapters addressing specific questions - I don't think there's much it doesn't cover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent clinical reference . . . not the best for written board review, January 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Evidence-Based Practice of Anesthesiology: Expert Consult - Online and Print, 2e (Paperback)
I bought the Kindle e-book version of this text . . . so I'll briefly review the item from an e-book perspective and from a content perspective.

As an e-book, this book suffers from the same problems many other textbooks suffer from when converted to e-book format . . . difficult or impossible to read all of the tables/charts/diagrams, which often do not fit nicely into the e-book format. However, this text is better than most in this regard, probably b/c most of the content is simply written with fewer tables than are found in some other texts.

From a content perspective . . . this is an excellent text for answering/discussing/learning about clinically relevant and oftentimes controversial issues in actual anesthesia practice. However, if you're looking for a text to review for written boards, I'd recommend Morgan and Mikhail or Anesthesiology Review by Faust. If you're looking for a text to review for oral boards, however, I think this is an excellent source for that . . . as oral boards frequently delve into controversial topics. Dr. G.

This is a great book, specially for residents preparing for the ITE and ORAL boards as it gives you a good overall view of the critical questions and the latest literature on these subjects like the ASRA guidelines, B-blockers, Regional techniques etc. Easy to read and good Author comments at the end of every chapter
