Editorial Reviews

Review

Evidence-Based Practices for Social Workers is highly accurate, extremely well documented, informative, and clearly illustrates the amount interventions are documented by research. This book shines a light on the next wave of practice methods, and therefore should be required reading for every social work practice and policy student. --Edward Taylor, University of Minnesota

Although lengthy (547 pages long) and, at first glance, more appropriate to be used as a textbook for social work graduate students, I can now see just how effectively this book can be used as a reference to social workers at ALL levels of practice. After becoming a social worker 33 years ago I found it to be extremely helpful in updating my knowledge base as to what research has shown to be effective social work practice these days.

The book is written by an MSW with a PhD from Rutgers who is an associate professor at Boston College. He is a long-term advocate of evidence-based social work practice. He defines this in Part 1:Defining Evidence-Based Practice in Social Work which includes four chapters everything from Definition, Processes and Principles to Qualitative and Quantitative Assessment to Selecting and Implementing Interventions to Evaluating Interventions and Programs.

Part 2: Psychosocial Problems of Adults contain the next six chapters with a heavy emphasis on Substance Abuse and Dependence in Chapter 6. Chapter 5 details Schizophrenia, Chapter 7 Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Chapter 9 Depression and Chapter 10 Antisocial and Borderline Personality Disorders.

For those social workers working with couples and/or children and adolescents the author further details what he recommends in Part 3:Psychosocial Problems of Couples, Children and Families. In Chapter 11 Distressed Couples he describes the often ignored social problem of domestic violence not ony with heterosexual couples but in gay unions as well. Chapter 14 later deals with Child Abuse and Neglect.
