Editorial Reviews

Review

(4 1/2 Stars out of 5) As with [Keneally]'s dark, sophomore effort Boil That Dust Speck, listening to the record is like rubbernecking to observe the aftermath of a head-on collision between jazz, pop, and avant-garde; one strains to discern verses and choruses that jut out awkwardly from the carnage without context, while quotidian grievances and stray horn parts flutter in unannounced. It's an assembly of premorse musical conventions that bleed brilliantly in and out of one another. --Slant Magazine

(3 1/2 Stars out of 4) Minnemann hit pay dirt when he made the inspired decision to send the 52-minute improv piece to multi-instrumentalist Mike Keneally. Long adept at locating and exploiting that fine line between the experimental and the groove-and song-centric, Keneally turned Minnemann's towering display of dynamics and virtuosity into the song-cycle Evidence of Humanity, a record that is at once violently strange and thrillingly familiar. --Jeff Meirs - The Buffalo News

As with Scambot, the concept itself recalls Zappa (in this case, his imaginary solos of the late '70s) and the grandeur reaches Yes levels, but in execution it goes elsewhere. The best argument for the survival of the CD is to create a work that creates its own world. Evidence of Humanity achieves this goal. --Pat Buzby - JamBands.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Three Thumbs Up!!! November 12, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Not unlike his former employer Frank Zappa, Mike Keneally is a man blessed with enormous musical talent and intelligence. German drummer/multi instrumentalist/composer Marco Minnemann is not far behind. Evidence Of Humanity is the latest offering in the ongoing Normalizer 2 series initiated by Marco Minnemann. The challenge to other musicians is to compose and perform original material to accompany Marco's prerecorded drum track.

To get right to the point, Keneally has succeeded marvelously in this formidable musical endeavor. Transforming a 51 minute drum solo into something that a listener will want to endure more than once is no small feat! In fact, after nearly fifteen spins I find this piece quite thrilling, and I always look forward to revisiting the CD. Incorporating acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards, bass, and voice, Keneally has created seventeen unique and truly amazing musical chapters adding up to an exciting and inspired musical whole.

I can't say enough good things about Keneally's guitar and piano skills. He is truly a monster musician with a very appealing and eccentric personal style, and the ability to navigate extremely challenging rhythmic conundrums with apparent ease. Track 4, Truth And Stone Cold Pew is a great example! In contrast, track 16 Trying features some of Keneally's most lyrical, evocative, and exquisite playing. Unlike many musicians possessing a considerable amount of technique on their preferred instrument(s), Keneally never sounds like he's showing off. His guitar playing is not littered with tired cliches and stock phrases. I find the playing by both of these extraordinary musicians to be nothing short of exhilarating! The phenomenal drum work and electric guitar playing will grab the attention of any mildly conscientious listener.

In all seriousity the images of MK and MM in a storage locker are worth the price of submission. This is an incredible musical collaboration if you're lucky enough to hear it. It is delightful that artists with this much talent are so generous as to put out material for what must be an audience whose density would fit in a thimbleful of dark energy. I, for one, appreciate it.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like Nonkertompf, this is also for you. April 23, 2011

Let's face it, you're here because you are either a fan of Marco Minnemann or Mike Kenneally. The two of them working together may be interested in the album. Marco gave MK a drum solo & prompted him to record over it. The product seems (to me) a lot like Keneally's masterwork "Nonkertompf". If you liked that album, this will be a good album to listen to in that same style. The album also has the two of them performing live on a DVD.

For me, this is a piece you have to take as a whole. You can't listen to just part on shuffle on your mp3 player.

I have 2 of these interpretations of Marco's drum solo, I'm interested to see what others come up with...
