5.0 out of 5 stars Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction, June 1, 2004
This review is from: Evidence of Love (Mass Market Paperback)
I bought this book many years ago, after reading an excerpt in Cosmopolitan magazine. I remember when this happened, because I live in Texas and it was in the newspaper. I have re-read the book many times, hoping to finally understand things from Candy's point of view, such as it is....This book is well-written and spell-binding. I don't feel that the authors were "sympathetic" to Candy; they seemed quite objective to me. There was no need to be sympathetic anyway, she did what she did, and she was very lucky she got the jury that she did.

I do wish very much that this book had photographs. And I wish that I knew what happened to everyone in the book years later. I read somewhere a long time ago that Pat and Candy had moved to Georgia and had separated. And that the Gore children (grown now)still resent Candy, needless to say. I just wonder how Candy thinks about the killing in her own mind, every day....It probably doesn't bother her much since she simply went about her business afterward and had no plans to reveal what happened. "I did not hold off because of the prints." Amazing.

Update - Candy lives in Atlanta, Georgia and goes by Candace Wheeler. She is a MS, LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) specializing in marriage counseling. She probably thinks she's an expert since she was bored in her marriage and had an affair - I bet she doesn't tell her clients, "By the way, I killed the wife of the man I was having my affair with - with an axe. And I left her little baby in her house alone screaming her lungs out, sitting in a dirty diaper for 12 hours or so. I just went on about my business as if I hadn't done anything, didn't know anything about it...don't you trust my advice now?" Candace Wheeler has got some nerve, but then, she always did.

Bethany and Alisa's maternal grandparents got custody of them after Allen and Elaine began abusing them. Allen and Elaine later divorced. Allen sent one of the girls a card once (signing it with only his first name), but he never called or visited them, probably scared of their grandfather who threatened him after Elaine started pulling out Bethany's hair. Alisa is married with a little boy and Bethany is in college. They both feel that Candy did not tell the whole story. Don Crowder committed suicide in his den, narrowly missing his third wife with a test shot through the door. She said he didn't feel needed any more by his kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful True Life Crime, June 13, 2000

This review is from: Evidence of Love (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of the best true life crimes I have ever read. You feel as if you know these 2 women. I could not put the book down. It will give you goose bumps will reading. I was just living 5 miles away from where the murder took place and know many of the people who are mentioned in the book. The murder is still the talk of Wylie, Texas. Let me tell you nothing has been left out. Read it if you can find a copy you won't be sorry!

5.0 out of 5 stars Crime Scene photos, August 1, 2005
By
This review is from: Evidence of Love (Mass Market Paperback)
I was in a criminal law class in Texas and saw the crime scene photos. The instructor was the ex-da for Collin County and his good buddy was Effibaugh, the original crime scene investigator. Very gruesome to say the least. I know there are photos out there, however, I don't understand why they didn't put any in the book.
I recommend this book for any true crime buff. I've read it several times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting true-crime book, November 27, 2006
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is the best true-crime book I've ever read. I bought it for my mother, and after she raved about it, I borrowed it and finished it in three days. I could not put it down ... I would read it before work and then sit through meetings daydreaming about the characters and the plot. The book is not only a fascinating story, it also has well-developed characters.

Be aware that some other Amazon reviews give away part of the plot ... you should read the book and then go back to these reviews afterwards as there is some interesting epilogue-type information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Won't be able to read fast enough, January 13, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Evidence of Love (Mass Market Paperback)
This was the first true crime book I ever read. Was in the library in college looking for a book and came across this one. I have read many true crime books since that time but this one always stands out. I have recomended it time and time again and have had everyone agree how incredible it is. I live in Texas only a few miles away from the murder scene. Many of the landmarks were familiar to me. I have read over 100 true crime books since this first introduction to this one but have come across few that are this good. I couldn't read fast enough...truly could NOT put the book down. Another great one is "Lethal Marriage."

5.0 out of 5 stars You must read this book..., March 12, 2001

I was fortunate to find this book. I have wanted to read the book after working as an extra in the made-for-tv movie based upon the story called "A Killing in a Small Town" that was filmed in Dallas in the mid-80s. Even with knowing the outcome of the story, I found the book to be incredibly spellbinding. The authors do a marvelous job of telling the story in a way that builds the suspense and also follows the logical progression of events. I highly recommend this book for everyone. Also, see the movie if you can. Check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arguably the best true crime book ever written., November 21, 1998
By A Customer
I would echo the comments of the previous reviewers. This book tells of an extraordinary crime involving two very ordinary women. The authors do a masterful job of re-creating the events in a suspenseful way and, more than ten years after reading the book, the amazing story remains vivid in my mind.. Whenever someone asks me to recommend a true crime book, "Evidence of Love" always gets the nod.

5.0 out of 5 stars Update on one of the characters, May 26, 2005

Pecos 45 (Fort Stockton, TX) - See all my reviews
Candy Montgomery's defense attorney, Don Crowder (the man who got her off of the murder charge) committed suicide recently. Shot himself. I have to wonder if the guilt of knowing that he freed a guilty person finally got to him. This book is still relevant and just as riveting today. Read it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best true crime book ever...., February 21, 2000
By A Customer
This was the book that started me on my 15 year journey of reading true crime... From the first page to the last you feel like you know these people, that they could have been your neighbors & the people you go to church with. Two normal women in their late 20's end up in a laundry room with an ax & one doesnt come out alive. The fact the lady that did come out alive, went back to help with vacation bible school & function normally the rest of the day, is amazing. I felt a special attachment to this book for i grew up a few miles from where all this happen & how it effected Dallas the summer it happen. It is so well written that you actually undersand how the attorney gets the murderer off & it doesnt shock you. This is a must have if you can find it to purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Read-it-Againer", January 4, 2004
By

You find yourself rereading this book every once in a while throughout the years because you can't believe what happened happened. Amazing story with an even more amazing ending. Makes you wish you knew what happened to the survivor of that axe fight. How did her life turn out? One thing's for sure, you never stop trying to figure her out. Was she merely a sociopath or was she just having a bad day? And what about the people on that jury?
