sounds of terror,
By A Customer
This review is from: Evil Dead (Audio CD)
Joseph LoDuca really captures the mood of a true horror classic with this haunting array of instrumental madness. From the opening notes of the peaceful but erie introduction through to the final notes of The Cabin/Wounded Melody you are thrown into a downward spiral of fear and pleasure. Lock your windows and doors, turn out the lights and enjoy the frights.

FINALLY, the 1st EVIL DEAD music score is re-released!,
By phillyPete "pete" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Evil Dead (Audio CD)
The 1st Evil Dead film is more than just a great low-budget horror film. It is an excellent showcase of talent from a team of self-described "hack filmmakers from Detriot" overcoming all obstacles and making one of the most copied, influential (and FUN) independent films of all time. The music score is no exception. Mixing sweet string sections with great analog synth sounds, it is another important highlight of the films greatness. As a fan of the 1st Evil Dead film, I thought a CD of Joe LoDuca's music from this classic was a pipe dream. I've seen photos of it and was surprised that it was ever in print. An unsung hero of the Rennaissance Pictures crew is given his due. Excellent. http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/petecellar/evildead.html

Great soundtrack to go along with one of the best no-budget horror flicks ever.,

While most no-budget horror films of the late 70's early 80's were plagued with hideous synthesizer soundtracks, Sam Raimi's debut film, "The Evil Dead", featured wonderfully-composed music that actually sounded like a real score, not something a one-time wannabee "composer" with a synthesizer soundboard threw together overnight.
Indeed composer Joseph LoDuca has taken great care to make sure the score sounds as rich as possible, and succeeds with flying colors. Tracks like "Eye games" do a great job establishing the love between the two main characters, while other tracks like "Rape of the Vines" and "Skin" are noticably creepy. Though LoDuca does use synth sounds time-to-time, he uses it intelligently and thus builds the barrier between ED's score and just about every other synth score of its time. This soundtrack is pretty rare but if you come across it, don't hesitate to add it to your soundtrack collection! Fine work from a rather underappreciated composer.

Nice Soundtrack from a Frightening Movie,
By Yuri Cunha "Juggalo" (Brazil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Evil Dead (Audio CD)
This sountrack is kind of rare nowadays, and it's a classic. Alike the movie, it's a different soundtrack. The songs are all composed and conducted by Joseph LoDuca. They're all instrumental songs. And all of them are classical, although some of them are really weird for being classic. My favorite songs here are "Introduction" (A Piano-only song, great melody), "Check On You" (I'm not sure of which instrument it is played with, but it sounds like acoustic guitar), "Dawn/Incantaton" (Don't ask me... The are cellos and many other instruments). It's good for a Halloween party, yes.. Because there are some scary songs, but not all of them. Some are romantic, other just weird, like if Joseph was trying to mix instruments to create different this. The weirdest, in my opinion is "Get The Lantern / Book Of The Dead", it mixes every possible instruments. In a part of this song, it even sounds like Brazilian's Samba... Very weird. Overall, it's a great collectable for us, Evil Dead fans. There is a note by Stephen King talking about the movie and some movie stills in the CD too. If you are a soundtrack collector, it is a great item too. Just don't buy this soundtrack if you're looking for normal songs, heavy metal (most horror movies fans like this kind of music), or if you hate classical music anyways. For the rest of us, but it at Amazon.com while you still can, because I think this soundtrack by Varése Sarabande (which is imported from Germany) will be sold out soon, because they are not made anymore.. It's one-in-a-lifetime-chance... The only reason I do not give this CD more stars it's because I'm not a big fan of classical music, and there are some boring songs.

Journey into the macabre,
By
This review is from: Evil Dead (Audio CD)
Joseph LoDuca has really captured the heart and soul of "The Evil Dead" with his score. The music or cacophonies on this CD has many layers that are eerie, sullen, unnerving and haunting. "The Evil Dead" is a classic on so many levels and this soundtrack is a requirement for any hard core fan. The sound quality on this CD is very good.
If I am not mistaken, I think the entire score is composed only with analog synths and strings. The result is a minimal journey into the macabre. I should note that this soundtrack is very short; I recall the length is about 30 minutes. Which is sort of disenchanting since the price of this CD is usually pretty high. Nevertheless, this is music that can be enjoyed time and time again. You know with Halloween coming up next month, this score would be great to play at a Halloween party or to play outside while the little tikes come for "trick or treats"!

I was fortunate enough to look on eBay several years ago for the import CD for Evil Dead. I lucked out on the first day that I looked, and found a copy about 3 or 4 years ago, and it had only been on eBay for about 10 hours, it had a Buy It Now Price of $14.99 and the shipping was about $5.00. The amazing part it was the Import Japanese CD with both Evil Dead/Evil 2 on the same CD. I always wanted the 1st Evil Dead soundtrack on CD, but I also wanted the soundtrack to Evil Dead 2. I didn't realize until recently that I was a pretty rare item. I recommend this CD is you are a fan of Evil Dead, and if you are a fan of Joseph Lo Duca's music.

i got hold of the soundtrack of EVIL DEAD in 1995. the cd was imported from japan and it also included the full soundtrack to EVIL DEAD II. what is suprising to find out is that both movies were able to come up with solid, full soundtracks.
jo lo duca was able to capture the movie's essence through music. the soundtrack is unnerving, horrifying and a classic. the movie became more effective with the music.... |
