Evil Dead Regeneration

"Hail to the King, baby!" - does that ring a bell?
Or how about "Who wants some, huh?! Who's next!" or "Good - bad - I'm the guy with the gun!" - "Klatu Verata Nictu" anyone?

If you're still with me then let's get straight to the game. If not, do yourself a favor, send your girl-friend shopping (that should take a couple of days), get a pizza and a can of beer, donate your brain at the local Red Cross office (you really don't need it for what you're about to do...) and rent the good old "Evil Dead" Trilogy: Evil Dead I, II and Evil Dead III: Bruce Campbell vs. the Army of Darkness - starring "Ash" performed by the King of all B horror movies: Bruce Campbell himself! If you're done watching you'll probably want to get the games right away (Evil Dead Regeneration as well as its not quite so good but still pretty cool predecessor "Evil Dead and a fistful of boomstick").

Evil Dead Regeneration (EDR) takes place right after the first two movies. To sum up the plot: A wacko-professor-dude leaves a secret tape behind (yeah: tape! This was the 80s - no CDs around yet...) in a creepy cabin in the woods. Some young adults decide to do their private sleep-over in the abandoned cabin (a couple of jerks and a couple of girls including one shy virgin, who's gonna survive longest (rule of thumb for most 80's horror movies). Of course, they check out the tape listening to all kinds of creepy chanting. Obviously someone was bored with life and recorded the whole Necronomicon - "Book of the Dead" - onto it. (Now cool down gothic-freaks, the book is available in every good library so spare us with your satanic junk. Thanks!) And before the virgin even has a chance to either run home or change her mind and do the bad thing with the white trash available all hell breaks lose and all kinds of zombie-action follows!
Yeah, I never promised you it would have a plot (I told you to donate your brain!), but neither has life and life is still fun! Fortunately the movies never took themselves too seriously, neither does EDR and neither should you.

Now this is where the game starts. Do you still have your brains unhinged? Good! That's the spirit, now we're gonna have fun!

Just like the movies the game's plot is just an excuse to kill lots of undead scum. And do it with style! Yessir, just like good old Ash in the movies (or the fearless vampire killers in the 90s classic "From Dusk Till Dawn"), you'll get to send all kinds of "Deadites" back to hell where they came from.
First off, you have your trusty chainsaw. It is an extension of your arm to be precise (See, Ash lost his hand in battle so he deemed it a good idea to replace it with a trusty chainsaw. His girl-friend had her doubts but it just came in so handy in the kitchen cutting the bread...) Then you'll get all kinds of secondary weapons like the fabulous sawed off shotgun! Yes, we have seen that one before in 1000 other games, but we've also had the "wheel" for thousands of years and it still rolls in a satisfying manner. All weapons are utterly enjoyable and once you get the flamethrower and automatic weapons your life will be complete.
Now here's the best thing: you can do combos of all kinds. And they flow nicely and smooth (unlike "Fistful of Boomstick" where combat was mostly flawed and sluggish even though it still provided a lot of fun).
For example: instead of just sawing the Deadites to convenient slices that easily fit in overhead luggage compartments, you can also impale them with your chainsaw. Once they are impaled and struggling and wriggling around on your chainsaw blade, the sadist inside you may choose to watch that zombie struggle and die while the pacifist and old Hippie inside you may choose to blow that zombie's head right off with the shotgun thus ending its misery. Peace, brother!
Oh and then there's a lot of finishing moves you can pull off once a Deadite has had its fair share of bullets, fire or spankings. All of them are just as bloody as they are exaggerated to a cartoonish degree making it look wildly hilarious. My favorite is still that one where Ash turns around to seemingly walk away just to point the shotgun upside-down back over his shoulder and pull the trigger in exactly that machismo fashion that girls say they hate but secretly adore :-)
The combat also borrows heavily from "Devil May Cry", which is good! Why not copy from the best! You can sometimes keep shooting enemies in the air before they drop down deader than regular deads.

The best thing: Ash is no longer alone. He now has a sidekick in the shape of a Half-Deadite-Dwarf (sorry: that's a vertically challenged person), you can even kick him right into a cluster of enemies - and they won't appreciate to make his acquaintance, because he acts like a modern 4 year old throwing a temper tantrum in the face of his helpless mum. And no "Super-Nanny" is going to stop Sam from completely wrecking Deadite gatherings, either. He's a killer. But a funny and talkative sidekick nonetheless.

Which brings me to the chapter of voice acting: it is awesome! Bruce Campbell even outdoes the job he did in the last game and Sam's voice actor is just as much fun. Both of them highlight a lot of the game's plot with their often cynical, sarcastic and utterly hilarious banter, that Ash has become famous for!

The sounds are good - nothing outstanding here but also nothing to really complain about.
Graphics and level design have improved a lot since the last game in the series. They are, however a mixed bad. While some levels clearly show professional design and artwork some other parts of the game look like they could have used another go or two with the paintbrush. While the graphics are a far cry from say "Project Snowblind" or "Darkwatch" they are still far enough above average to please the eye. Also there seem to be little bugs in the game that you may or may not come across while you're playing, but nothing real serious.

Well, you don't play this game just for the graphics anyway. You'll be too busy fighting off wave after wave of Deadites which are foolish enough to come your way. Speaking of which:
The enemy AI however is weak! Even though Deadites come in all different kinds of forms and attack patterns. But, well, DUH!!!, of course they are dumb: they're Zombies and all kinds of undead scum so they're meant to be dumb! They don't have a brain! And you shouldn't either, remember? If you want opponents WITH BRAINS, play Socom - Navy Seals online, bud! Before you know it you'll be back wishing they hadn't if you constantly get you butt kicked by anonymous geeks ! :-)

O.k. now go get the game and show those undead who's boss!
Hope you have a blast! And don't forget to pick up your girl-friend when you're done playing! And bring her flowers, make those movies disappear and rent "Hitch" instead and say something romantic like you're sorry you didn't call while you were play... going to that continued education.
Oh yeah, almost forgot: don't forget to pick up your brain on the way back, you may need it outside this game!

I originally bought this game [Evil Dead: Regeneration] because I was a fan of the series [Starting with Evil Dead: Hail to the King and the second Evil Dead: A Fist Full of Boomstick]. It is a great edition to a series that is often overturned or under rated.

Evil Dead Regeneration doesn't in fact continue the game series (as in, it doesn't follow A Fist Full of Boomstick) but moreover from the actual movie itself; Evil Dead. As from the beginning of ED:R you begin in the Prof. Knowby's cabin and go to present day, where Ash (voiced by Bruce Campbell, the hero of the Evil Dead series) is in an insane asylum after being arrested for the murder of his friends and claiming the dead themselves came to life and killed them.

One of the best features of the game is the addition of Evil Dead's first Sidekick, a ADD driven half-deadite midget named Sam (voiced by Ted Riami, the guy who played Joxer in Xena) made that way by Reinhart, the doctor of the asylum who has come into procession of the Book of the Dead and Knowby's Diary. Sam is also in the same insane asylum with Ash.

Ash and Sam are forced to team up, and have a chalk and cheese relationship. Sam is a talker, he continues to talk his mouth off and Ash continues to tell him to shut up alot. They make a wonderful combination for this game.

Sam can also be useful in battle, pressing the Up Directional Button, Ash can kick Sam onto Deadites to attack them, kick him into a furnace, a meat mincer or even a basketball hoop just for fun and giggles. Ash can also `possess' Sam and you can control him in situations to dangerous for Ash (as he is mortal, Sam is immortal).

One of the disappointing aspects of the game is that you can only have 6 weapons, a chainsaw, grappling hook and/or flamethrower on his right arm, and either a pistol, shotgun or boom lance on his left arm. The chainsaw does get upgraded though, too a titanium belted.

Another disappointment is the repeat play with Peepers, even though he's cute.

Extras are great, you can unlock 20 extras which include; different interviews, trailers and the credits. Some of the interviews include answers to rumors about Evil Dead 4 and Freddy vs. Jason vs Ash and also something confusing about Spiderman vs. Ash which was a laugh. Also in game you can collect Rage Upgrades (for Evil Ash) and Health Upgrades.

Though there is no replay value. And no difficulty setting.

If you have a morbid sense of humor, this is the game for you.

I loved the previous Evil Dead game: "FISTFUL OF BOOMSTICK", it was full of action, puzzles and great one-liners from Ash! This game doesn't have as many cutting one-liners, but hearing Bruce speaking the lines is still a kick. The puzzles aren't as hard and the storyline is pretty linear. The great bonus is the new character by Sam Raimi's brother, Ted, as the SIDEKICK. Where you literally have to kick Ted to destroy the Deadites. It's a good time, try it!

This is the best Evil Dead game i had ever played, i play fist full of boomstick and compared to this is 10 times better. You have unlimited bullets on each of the weapons you have and you get a harpoon gun for you right hand, its like being scorpion from Mortal Kombat, except when they come back to you,you shoot them with your boomstick which is so cool. You get sam which is Ash's little deadlite partner, you can kick him as many times you want too. The Missions are not as hard as in boomstick which took me a month to pass, in fact they easy in some levels that are too easy. This game is best series of any other Evil Dead games i ever played.

THQ's Evil Dead games have taken alot of flack from know it all video game nerds. Granted, the first game, Evil Dead:Hail to the King (For the PS1), had somewhat awkward controls, and the chainsaw was always running out of gas, and the guns out of ammo. Add to this the re-spawnig feature of the deadites, which forced you to kill each one several times, and the whining reached a fever pitch.But it really wasn't all that bad. Though admittedly, Evil Dead:A Fistful of Boomstick for the PS2 was a big improvement. Better controls, unlimited gas for the chainsaw, and a nice targeting system for the shotgun. A good storyline, good graphics, and more great voice-acting from the great Bruce Campbell made the second Evil Dead game a blast for longtime fans, though the gaming dorks still bashed it.Now, we have Evil Dead:Regeneration, and I'm sure there will be some whining and moaning about this one, too, though I can't imagine why. The gameplay for Regeneration is rock solid. There are all sorts of cool combat moves you can perform with Ash, though my personal favorite is the "beat down" where you just spank a downed enemy with your chainsaw until there's nothing left but pulp.Ash and his sidekick Sam (voiced by Ted Raimi) must travel through a series of portals, and close them before the evil can corrupt the Earth, yadda...yadda... Typical video game plot. Nothing exceptional, but that's not the point. The point here is in the mayhem. Finally, the boys at THQ have given us not only unlimited chainsaw fuel, but unlimited ammo for all weapons (handgun, shotgun, rocketlauncher, flamethrower). Freed from having to pause in the middle of combat to switch guns (that does really get tiresome), Ash is free to hack and slash his way through waves of deadites. The unlimited ammo thing was a good decision. Having to constantly find ammo for your guns adds nothing but tedium to a game. "Realism" be hanged. We just wanna rock and roll! Puzzles this time are few, flashing indicators guide you through most of the levels, with some very humorous cinematics in-between. Bruce and Ted outdo themselves here, providing hilarious banter not only in the cinematics, but also throughout the course of the game. The spirit of Army of Darkness comfortably resides here.Then there's "Bad Ash". After you gain the ability to summon Ash's evil counterpart (as seen in Evil Dead 2), you can "hulk out" into Bad Ash for a limited amount of time, depending on the status of your "rage meter". Suffice to say, this kicks major [...].All in all, Evil Dead:Regeneration is a slick package. Not too hard (I finished it in four days, and I wasn't exactly gluing myself to the controller), and not too expensive at [...] brand new.I'm sure the hardcore video gamers will find something to complain about, but that's their problem. I'm just glad to have Ash back, if even in video game form. THQ has done a great service to fans everywhere who would rather have an Evil Dead 4 than a Spider-Man 3 from Sam Raimi, but are denied by the finiancial realities of the movie biz.Maybe someday. But in the meantime, Ash Lives! At THQ.

This is a good game and if you're into the Evil Dead series it's a great game. As a series that's found its continuation in video games as opposed to film this is a solid next step plot wise. The introduction of Sam the deadite is fantastic. The banter and antics between Ash and Sam are fantastic and vintage Evil Dead material. A must for the fan of the series. For those unfamiliar with the series, it stands on its own and makes for a good time regardless.

Yah this is the best Evil Dead game yet. The graphics/Ash are done up in a slight-cartoonish way so it's not "realistic" but it really works. I thought I'd hate the whole deadite-sidekick thing, but it was actualy fun and funny. Gameplay is tight, controls are fine, it's fun to play and you get different upgrades with Ash's guns/chainsaws. Lotta levels, nothing too difficult. You can unlock secret videos that show Bruce talking about the game, etc - those are fun to see. Not a bad game and I recommend it to any fan of ASH.

Now, where's my chainsaw??

Evil Dead Regeneration is a hit with any fan of the evil dead movies or games. Although the game is a bit repetitive, it has all the elements that an Evil dead or gaming fan needs at an OUTSTANDING PRICE. While other games sell at 49.99$ first day you get a whole lotta' game for your price with this one.

Humor and horror with a great story and laughs. They took away the ablity to throw out your own one liners.. That's fine. The action is packed. IF you haven't gotten this yet, your missing out. First person shooter fans will not be dissapointed as the game is mostly a 3d carnage fest.

This game rocks!! It is much better than 'Hail to the king' by far!! The action is solid for a EVIL DEAD game. Graphics are awesome! Everything is awesome! BUY THIS GAME!!

This game is the the best Evil Dead yet. I've played both of the others and struggled through them just because I'm a big fan of the subject material. The first one was horrible, the second one was better but this one is by far the best. I guess the third time is the charm. The humor in this game is dead (no pun intended) on with the series and one of the main reasons I fell in love with the Evil Dead trilogy. If you're a fan of Evil Dead or Bruce Campbell you owe it to yourself to pick this game up. We may never see Bruce in the role of Ash again on the silver screen, so this may be the only way us "deadites" can get our fix and I'll take it!
