I really wanted to like this, but alas...,

This is an interesting album-- after making two albums with Voivod, arguably the most innovative and progressive metal band ever, Eric Forrest makes this, one of the most derivative albums I've heard in a long time. If I hadn't known this came out a little while ago, I probably would have thought it came out sometime in the early 80's (ignoring the modern production). When I first heard about this, I was very put off my the naive song titles ("Satanic Rituals"? Give me a break!) and cover art, but thought I should give the former singer of Voivod the benefit of the doubt. I should have listened to my instincts, and saved some money in the process. There are some interesting touches here and there-- the last track is pretty good-- but basically it sounds like straight forward 80's thrash, almost entirely devoid of anything original or interesting. The drums never really get out of their repetitive rapid fire thrash mode, and the guitars just chug away on standard metal riffs, going nowhere in particular. It has a nice European feel to it, something like old Germanic thrash, but the most interesting moments are actually those that sound like they were lifted from Iron Maiden. It might have been fun to play, but I don't know, I would expect more from someone who played with the likes of Voivod. I thought Eric Forrest brought a harshness to that band that really worked, and he was involved in the making of a true masterpiece with them (Phobos), so this album leaves me a little mystified, and very disappointed. I guess this sort of disappointment is inevitable, when someone from one of your favorite bands branches out on their own you expect certain things from them. I just thought he would have learned more from his time in Voivod than this! And he's from Quebec, which seems to be the breeding ground for innovative metal! I don't get it. I keep listening to it, hoping there's something I'm missing, but I don't think so.

"E-Force" is Eric Forrest's Voivod name. Everyone had a rock 'n' roll moniker in that band, though Forrest's wasn't used often at all while he was a member. Voivod fans will be pleased up to an extent with this record if they are fans of the era of the band which is defined by his tenure. Actually, if there were another member this record wouldn't work to the extent that it does, mostly because of the vocals. Forrest is an excellent singer for this kind of music, moreso in Voivod than E-Force because in the former he employed more of his range. But E-Force kind of sounds like Bolt Thrower as well because of the twin guitar rhythm work and the overabundance of double bass drums. The record is kind of chaotic and almost sounds sloppy although it isn't - it's just because it sounds like it's barely contained. Bottom line, this record is a good listen but won't blow you away. I'm not dissapointed that I purchased this album.
