Amazon.com Product Description

Evil Islands: Curse of the Lost Soul is an RPG-strategy game based on the idea that a small, properly applied force can affect the course of events more effectively than raw power. To accomplish most of the objectives, one must exercise good strategic planning for both covert operations and open strikes. The RPG element is also very strong, with an extensive story line, a mystery to solve, and a multitude of characters with their own ambitions. These characters can either become the hero's friends or foes.

Superior technology brings players a whole new range of possibilities never before seen in comparable games. Many of the characters' attributes and all equipment are precisely visualized in the game modes, letting the player visually assess the strength of adversaries. A free-motion camera may zoom in to show wrinkles on an adversary's forehead, introduce elements of action to the game, or zoom out to show positions and actions of all units in a classical strategy fashion--all enriched with beautiful 3-D graphics.

In the story, Zak looks to find his destiny and true love. On his way through the unknown lands of the Evil Islands, he will encounter friendship and treachery, affection and loathing, fluffy pets and hideous monsters, princes and paupers, and all sorts of strange creatures. He will master cold steel and high magic, will learn to obey and command, and will become a hit man and a mark.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most exciting thing to play, ever, May 18, 2002

... The game is exciting, I got addicted to it and spent all my evenings playing it for nearly a month, and than I played it another time again. It has it flaws allright, for it gets stunned now and again on anything less the PIII 800, but there is a solution even for weaker PC's It got allright on my PII 400, when I added extra cooler on the proccessor, and left the case open for better ventilation. And about the game itself - well, you got errands all right, but that is the only way to discover your hidden past, for thus step by step you gather information about the wizard who's the only one there able to recover your lost memory. And hero's innuendos seemed funny and entertainingnot boring to me. There is choice too - if you want to be able to kill stronger foes, walk alone, for comrades (up to 3 overall, available to hire or join in with your case in the village) just take a part of the score you get with an experience obtained by the way you accoplish current quests and kill enemies, so there is less left for the main character to develop, + stick on developing fighting skills, and leave magic alone. Want to run for a longer time? Spend points of your expirience on agility. And there are foes from which Zak can run away, some slow trolls and ogres. Most wonderful there is achoce which is given to the player - you can fight, or sneak past you enemy, and there is difference where you do it - it's easier by night. And up to a point you can control the fight even as in action games - you gotta use Num numbers, the best way being aiming at your foe's head. Thus I was able to kill even middle aged trolls in Kania. Or, else, you can develop wizardry on the expense of strengh, thus being weak fighter, yet great mague able to cast invisibility spell upon himself and so pass inhidden past strongest enemies. Game gives ooportunitis for both, and it adds in flavour of real life to it, for you can't both be warrior and wizard, or, rather, you can be both, but mediocre one, if you choose to develop magical abilities as well as fighting ones. The game is hard to play, yes, but it makes it even more exciting, for what the fun is finishing all in one evening? With the evil islands you'll be playing it for days. Besides, one can play it online with live opponents, which makes it even more interesting. And no one said a word about music, which is excellent. The most fascinating for me was "Kania" theme. I even got the music of this game separetely on the hard drive, and listen to it now and again, even when tackling some boring job. And what a multitude of characters are there to fight or to ally with! The only thing I disliked, was that there was no more to play, and the game ended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply a terrific game, January 16, 2004
This review is from: Evil Islands: Curse of the Lost Soul (CD-ROM)
The best since Daggerfall. You really have to BUILD your character and boy is it ever tough and involving. I had a friend that I gave this to, and he did not like it at first, but after he figured out what it took to develop his character, he was addicted-- he wound up playing the game all the way through about 4 times, each time improving on his abilities until he was godlike by the 4th time.

Amazing game that deserved way better press than it got. And to think that Dungeon Seige gets a lot of WOWs...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good game with some minor gripes (3.5 stars), April 29, 2001

I was at the store and decided to buy this game on impulse. It looked pretty good and the store has a good return policy just in case. Right now I am not sure if I will be taking it back or not.

Now this really is a good game...I like it alot so far but there are a few complaints I have. The first complaint being the camera angles. The camera is easy to move around and you can do so by either keyboard or your right mouse button. But what I don't like is the deceiving screenshots on the box and the website. They show a ground level 3rd person view where you can see the horizon and sky in the background yet theres no way in game to achieve this view. It's pretty much always a top-down or top-down angled view. You can zoom in and out but it doesnt help too much.

My next complaint is the inventory system. The only way to access your inventory is when you are in town or when you exit the area you are in (can access inventory on a world map). So if you want to make a weapon or allocate experience points into your stats you have to pretty much be in town.

A very minor but extremely annoying issue is the main characters look and especially voice. He has probably the most feminine voice EVER for any male hero. Not only that, he occasionally SAYS feminine things like "I love magic" like a 6 year old girl when you cast a spell. It might not sound too bad to you but it's BAD....REAL BAD.

And my last complaint is the extraordinarily large number of critical hits that are rolled, both given and taken from you. A battle could be going well and too many times you end up dying to a critical hit which happens way too often. This in turn forces you to constantly be saving your game before and after every battle.

You will get ALOT of quests in this game, I think 80+ if I'm not mistaken. Though linear, I like the quests I have done so far. You have a quest screen that you can call up at any time that tells you your exact objectives, where to do them and how.

You also wont be decked out in full plate mail an hour into the game. Money is hard to come by but I welcome the challenge. You can buy pre-made armor and weapons at the store but you can also buy/find blueprints to make new weapons/armor/spells with raw materials you find throughout the game, a very nice touch. Also all the weapons/armor you make can have permanent spells infused in the by use of runes you find when creating new items.

The problems aside I give this game 3 and 1/2 stars, if they could patch some minor problems up it would definitely earn 4.
